Anhlancl, Ore., Monday, Mar. 21), 1915 INSPIRATION WILL SPREAD. ASHLAND TIDINGS. Monday. March 29. 1915 Within ten years the gap between Ashland and Medford will be literally closed. On both sides of the Pacific highway will be one long row of well ordered homes along a splendidly paved street, with trees growing to shade the avenue and houses not more than twenty rods apart. Im provements like the highway when stolidly constructed attract Just that thing. The benefits far exceed the expense In such Improvements, es pecially when applied to main thor oughfares. The influence of Jackson county's highway improvement will be notice able throughout the state, for people from other less progresHlve sections seeing what we have accomplished here, will go home with renewed spirit and start and continue agita tion until their community has done likewise. When the Farnum grade Is re duced as the county court has agreel it shall be this spring, the way will be continuous from city to city with out a break and will be noted for Its mothnc8B and beauty by every auto tourist who comes this way. And the Siskiyou grade will be a road of high reputation, for it Is absolutely the best mountain grade on the Pa clflc coast. The highway should be paved from Ashland to the foot of the Siskiyou grade this summer at the same time the first state expenditure is beln made over the grade the state pav Inc Joining the county paving at th foot of the grade so that paving will ho continuous from Central Point through to the California line as soon as practicable. If this Is speedily done that highway will prove the best Investment Jackson county ever nlade, but to reap the best benefits It must be continuous In finish. The ne::t five years will make a greater change in the Rogue River Valley than all the years past. It has Just now reached the stage where every development will show its best. Since the Pacific highway wan com pleted between here and Centre.1 Point there has been a noticeable ac tivity along It in the way of tearing out dilapidated fences and replacing them with nev. painting the posts white in many Instances, and remod eling old and building new homes and barns. There I3 a kind of enchant ment about solid Improvement that begets more. Once the pace is set everyone becomes more or less inocu lated with the Idea of improvement and great changes in communities are soon, wrought with the little done by each citizen. It Is a good fever, so let It rage. No need for quarantine. It Is a mighty mean and cheap citi zen who will allow his old rickety fence to Join a span new white guard along a paved highway. And no body need tell him so. The silent witness condemns him and his con science soon moves him to like bet terment. His neighbor Is In the same fix. Hardily selfish Indeed ho must remain to allow his old rapaldy shackeldy fence to bugbear the land scape In such environment. So the work goes on step by step, one good accomplishment Inspiring another un til the valley will be what It long ago should have been, a place of order and beauty. TKRNIXSTS." Ashland has a few "fernlnsts." These have taken .occasion to criti cise the mayor and council for the scrap between members of the police force. They talk like they knew bet ter what should be done than the mayor and council who are in close touch with the situation and have the power to examine into the merits of the case and render an unbiased opinion and intelligent action. In the meantime curbstone opinions only agitate the community and re sult In confusion. The people elect ed the mayor and council to handle such matters. So far the administra tion has indicated Its ability to han dle the business. No doubt It will do so In this case. Unwarranted crit icism, on hearsay testimony, should be abandoned. That'H easy. The one that advertises most In the local papers and nearest fulfills Its advertising promises, of course. That is abso lutely true In any city. There is more money made In the Judicious use of printers' Ink than by any other method. The llvest merchant always has the most popular store, because j T5hQ People's Forum Commend High School Commercial Course. Editor Tidings: While the columns of your paper have been filled with the talk about the springs and their benefits, I have thought that possibly It would not be out of place to write you a few lines in reference to the commercial course in our high school that our students have been receiving under the instruction 01 Mr. Hodge. It seems to me no more than right that our superintendent of schools, Professor Eriscoe, and Mr. Hodge, Instructor of the commercial course, should receive a few words of praise and appreciation for their efforts and the wonderful results that they have produced. It haB been my pleasure to receive from the high school daily, one of these students, and I must candidly state that it has been a very agree able surprise to see the class ot work that several of these students have put out. I am sincere In my remarks when I state to you that many young ladies who have had several years of experience as stenographers are left far In the shade, comparing them with the advanced class of Mr. Hodge in our high school. If you do not consider it too much of an Imposition, I am going to ask you to give this space in your paper In the hopes that some of the families who are Interested in our springs and are reading the columus of your val uable paper on the same will also be able to see a word or two In favor of our schools. I will state also that what has been said is not only true of the commer cial course but of the several other departments in the school also. Thanking you very much, indeed, for your courtesy In this matter, I beg to remain, Very truly yours, W. N. USSHER, Manager. Editorial Note. Professor Briscoe would be glad to furnish any business man a stenographer from the depart ment any day for an hour or two without charge. The student needs the practical experience. A stenog rapher can be thus secured by tele phoning to the Ashland high school at any time. SUIT IN EQUITY TO FORECLOSE MORTGAGE. Summons.
