From the number of letters which
they have received on the subject re
cently, officials of the department
believe that sportsmen may uninten
tionally violate the provisions of the
, federal migratory bird law, which. It
la the purpose of the government to
enforce rigidly. Under the provis
ions of this law no waterfowl can be
shot In the northern or breeding zone
after January 15, except In New Jer
sey, where the season extends to Feb
ruary 1. In most of the southern or
wintering cone the season closes
February 1, but extends to February
16 in Florida, Georgia and South
Carolina. These regulations were
proclaimed on October 1, 1914. No
change has since been made In them,
and no change Is likely to be made
until the constitutionality of the law
has been passed on by the United
States supreme court. As a matter
of fact, the law provides that all
changes In the regulations must be
considered for a period of ninety
days, and then must be approved
and signed by the president before
they become effective. It is thus evi
dent that there is no possibility that
the prohibition of spring shooting
will be in any way modified this
year.
The officials of the department
who are intrusted with the enforce
ment of the law are anxious that
these facts be Impressed upon the
people because It Is the Intention to
Investigate carefully all reports of
violations made to the department'
Inspectors and wardens and to prose
cute all such violations In tho federal
courts. In this connection It Is point
ed out that prosecutions may be In
stituted at any time within three
years of the offense.
To Kill the ltodentn. v
Time and experience have fully
demonstrated the futility of virus as
a rodent exterminator, particularly
squirrels, gophers and mice posts.
Nearly all forms of poison have given
way to strychnine, and for this pur
pose there is nothing better than a
strychnine-coated wheat. The cupid
ity of manufacturers has in many
cases led them to diminish the
amount of poison below the safety
point, with the result that It has
proven worthless In use. Disappoint
ment has also arisen through improp
er coating. Farmers today are de
pending more and more on the well
tried, tested brands of coated wheat
for the destruction of squirrels and
gophers. No stock, fruit, grain or
alfalfa grower should Jeopardize his
crop by failure to act promptly this
season.
These rodents are now asleep;

soon, with the warm sun's rays, their
whistle will be heard, and this 1b the
psychological moment to sprinkle the
poUoned wheat. A few grains in the
early morning, dropped down each
burrow, will turn the trick. The long
fast makes the creatures ravenous
and the poison Is Immediately effect
ive. Fields have been shown where
thousands of these rodents have been
destroyed in twenty-four hours, by
this method.
