Restitution ,
After 44 Years
This is the story of W. H. Judson
of Portland, Ore., whose conscience
hurt him after 44 years, and secured
easement therefor from County Judge
F. L. Tou Velle.
In 1870 Judson lived in Ashland.
A sick man was in the Ashland Hotel
and he was given the task of nursing
him. The sick man died. Judson
took from his purse his wages, at
$2.50 per day, and what was left he
turned over to the county court, but
there was not enough to pay the un
dertaker, the doctor and the druggist.
At a camp meeting of the Apostolic
Faith in the Rose City last week Jud
son became converted and his mem
ory recalled the selfish act of nearly
half a century before, when he re
ceived full tithes but others did not.
He forthwith began to take steps to
right himself with the world and the
future, and wrote the county court a
letter, asking Jackson county to for
give him. Forgiveness was extended
to him by County Judge Tou Velle.
Judson's letter is as follows:
"Portland, Ore., June 28, 1914.
"To the Honorable Judge of Jackson
County.
"Dear Sir: In the year 1870 or 71
I was living in Ashland. There was
a sick man brought there to the Ash
land Hotel, and I was given the job
of nurse to him. In three or four
weeks he died, so I took of his money
just what would pay me $2.50 per
day for taking care of him, and it
took most of the money that he had.
There was a little change left that
was turned into the county, and the
doctor and the hotelkeeper turned in
their bills. Now God has saved me
of my sins and the Word teaches me
that I will have to make restitution
for all of my back life before I can
have a pure heart, and that is what
the word of God teaches and I know
that I did not do right, I taking my
wages out of his money, but should
have turned it all into the county
and shared with the others. So en
closed I send what we believe and a
stamped envelope with my address,
asking that the county will forgive
me for taking the law into my own
hands Instead of letting the county
do it."
Southern Oregon
Exhibit in 1915
Klamath Falls Northwestern: Con
tingent upon appropriation of $500
by each of the county courts of Klam
ath, Jackson, Josephine and Douglas
counties, the Oregon commission of
the Panama-Pacific International Ex
position will give to each of these
counties $500 to prepare suitable ex
hibits of southern Oregon ' for the
exposition at San Francisco next year.
This Is the word brought by Lewis
Wylde, who returned last evening
from Ashland, where he attended a
meeting of the Southern Oregon As
sociation for the San Francisco expo
sition'.
'The meeting was held Monday af
ternoon with the following present:
H. O. Frohbach, president of the as
soclatlon; Sam S. Josephson, secre
tary of the Roseburg Commercial
Club; F. W. Streets, secretary of the
Medford Commercial Club; George
W. Sager, secretary of the Ashland
Commercial Club; W. P. Qulnlan,
secretary of the Grants Pass Com
mercial Club and of the newly formed
association, and Lewis Wylde, secre
tary of the Klamath Chamber of Com
merce and vice-president of the asso
ciation. The county court of Jackson coun
ty already has appropriated $500, and
if the courts of the other three coun
ties appropriate a like amount $4000
will be available for ubo in collecting
exhibits of southern Oregon. A space
just at the right of the entrance into
the Oregon building at the exposition
six feet deep and sixty feet long has
been set aside for exhibits from
southern Oregon and it Is the plan
of the new association to make this

space one of the most attractive in
the building.
It is the plan of the association to
have each of the four counties in
volved make a specialty of those
products to which said counties are
best adapted. Klamath probably will
specialize on grains, grasses and pota
toes, Jackson on fruits, Josephine on
fruits and mining, and Douglas on
timber. Douglas will have an unique
exhibit of 200 speclments of timber
of that county, each specimen being a
different variety.
At its meeting at Ashland Monday
the association chose one assistant to
help the representative of each coun
ty In preparing the exhibits. Max A.
McCall was appointed for Klamath
county to assist Mr. Wylde, F. W.
Streets to assist H. O. Frohbach for
Jackson county, B. J. Stewart to as
sist Sam S. Josephson for Douglas
county, and C. L. Ilobart to assist
W. P. Qulnlan for Josephine county,

to the meeting at Ashland Monday

"The meeting was held In the quar
ters of the "Commercial Club," said
Mr. Wylde. "Tuesday morning we
were put In automobiles and taken
over Rogue River Valley and out east
of Ashland to the lithia springs.
George W. Seager, secretary of the
Ashland Commercial Club, acted as
host and a royal entertainment did
he provide."
The woman suffragists are kind
hearted. They send a delegation to
wait on the vice-president.
