To the Legal Voters of Oregon: I have filed my declaration with the secretary of state as a candidate for the republican nomination for governor, and as the law limits the expenditure of each candidate for this office to 15 per cent of one year's salary, I am compelled, in order to abide by the spirit and letter of the law, to avoid making an expensive campaigfin, and in order to reach the voters whom I will not be able to reach in person, I herewith submit through the press for your consider ation the following: f 5 1 'i mm BtE3TWrON FShJACLEV Phone 68. 211 E. Wood and Rock Springs Coal First I stand for a strict and rigid enforcement of every criminal statute. Second I favor equitable labor laws giving to the laborer just con sideration. Third I am opposed to high and extravagant legislative appropriations and the constant creation of salaried boards and commissions which carry with them an army of employes to be paid by the taxpayers of the state. Fourth I stand for the constant improvement of our public school system free from extravagance, and should the supremo court of the United States declare a forfeiture of the lands now held by the Oregon & California Railroad Company, -then and in that event I favor urging congress to place those lands at the disposal of the irreducible state school fund of Oregon. Fifth I stand for the permanent improvement of public roads from the market centers into the agricul tural districts, the same to be built under skilled management, so as to get full value for the money ex pended. Sixth I favor a constitutional amendment allowing the governor to veto any one or more items in an appropriation measure without veto ing the entire measure. High tax levies are usually the result of excessive appropriation! and experimental legislation, and the most effective cure for that abuse is to be more careful in the selection of your legislative members. I was born in Marion county, Ore gon, March 4, 1869, and was edu cated in the public schools, McMinn- ville College and the State Normal School at Monmouth, Oregon; admit ted to the bar by the supreme court in 1895; served five terms as mayor of Oregon City, three as deputy dis trict attorney; was elected presiden tial elector on the republican ticket in 1904, and county judge of Clack amas county in 1906. I am deeply interested in agricultural pursuits, own and manage the Dimick Stock Farm at Hubbard, Oregon, and pub lish the Western Stock Journal at Oregon City. "Tt'tofoewr Kill tarn hit Ufa shall one il: whOKoercr teilt lote hii life for 11 y take (tall find U."HlaUltem 16:!5. IT was nt tho close of the Great Teacher's ministry. Multitudes wore following Him, going up to Jerusalem to the Passover, at which J(?sus foreknow He would die as tho antitynkal Passover Lamb. To day's lesson gives us some of His teachings. The terms of iliseipleshlp which Je sus set forth differ widely from those proclaimed by some who profess to bo His mouthpieces. They sometimes de clare that to arise and request tho prayers of Clod's people Is a sufficient si,'n of diseiplcship. Such as do fit arc counted converts. To gel them even to Hike this step requires the hold ing out of some i n d ti c e m e n t greater business prosperity, an en trance Into society or a better pros pect of political preferment. If we contrast these with Jesus ('out of diivlpkship. words in this lesson, we shall pereeivo that the vast number of nominal Chris tians have been, so to speak, inveigled into professing what they never in tended to profess. Many have been entrapped into professing Christianity who never were Christians, according to the Master's conditions of disciple ship, who never hearken to His Word, who are not consecrated to His will. The Cost of Ditcipleahip. "If any man come to Me, and bate not father, mother, wife, children, brethren, sisters, yea. and his owu life also, he cannot bo My disciple. And whosoever doth not liear his cross, and come after Me, cannot be My disciple." Surely there Is no excuse for misunder standing such plain conditions! The Master's general teaching was that the whole world is estranged from God and without riuht to everlasting life. But He came to die, that they might have opportunity to return to Divine favor, lie did not say that only nis followers would have an opportunity of future life. Those who so declaro are adding to Kud's Word something out of harmony with lis teachings. The word hate is apparently used in contrast with love. To be Christ's dis ciple, then, means that we must so love the rd and the principles for which lie stands that love for others in comparison would be hatred. We are to be ready to sacrifice at the Lord's command every earthly hope, aim, object, and to lay down our lives willingly, gladly. Such as manifest de votion of this kind tan be trusted with anything. The fact that Jesus Himself was of this character, and placed the Father's will above all else, Is an assurance that all nis joint-heirs in the Kingdom will have the same spirit. The King dom will not be a selfish one, but the very reverse. The kings, princes and judges of that Kingdom will be not only irresistible in iwwer, but unbrib able. With them the Divine standard will be first, in the absolute sense. Definition of Cross-Bearing. Adding to the severity of the terms, Jesus declared, "Whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after Me, can not be My disciple." After we have taken our stand on the Lord's side, we must be proven. Only those who dem onstrate their worthiness by their faithfulness will be finally accepted of the lrd. Cross-bearing must be a dally matter. Our crosses are those oppositions of the world, the flesh ami the Devil, which cross the Divine will aa laid down in the Lord's Word. The only proper sentiment is that which the Master expressed, saying, "Xot My will, but Thine, be done." As advice not to undertake disciple ship without mature deliberation. Je sus gave a para ble of a man who began a tower, but could not com plete it. and thus made himself dis reputable, foolish. Another illustra tion was that of going to war with out proNr prep a r a 1 1 o u. All Christ's followers Folly of ike cartlttt set out to build ftniidw. character, and to light a good fight against Satan and sin. Therefore they must expect a hard battle, and must wage a good warfare. "Salt It Good, But" Jesus used salt as a symbol repre senting loyalty to Jod. which all Ola followers must have and maintain. If salt lose Ita valuo for seasoning pur poses, it is useless. So the Christian has it special purpose In tho world to bo a preserving power, and to bring out the good qualities of others. If ho fails to do so. he is of no particular service. "He that hnlh ears to hear, let him hear." All Jesus' followers uro to heird these words. Whoever neglects them despises the One who gave them, and will surely fall of a blessing that might have lecn secured. Wo are not to measure the world by the standards with which we measure ourselves and nil professing to bo Jesus' followers. The world's highest standard is tho Oolden Rule. Tbe Christian's highest standard is nclf-sacrlflce in doing tho Father's will.
