Mrs. Wilinor Hilt of Hilt, Cal., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lane. Mrs. Ed Sutton of Klamath Falls visited her father, 1.. W. Rogers, on Oak street. Miss Ireland arrived in Ashland Tuesday from Medford for a three weeks' stay. Mrs. Kaul Janney and Mrs. Frank Clark of Medford were guests of Mrs. Schwein Saturday. ' Mrs. W. A. Wtlshire returned Mon dav from Portland, where sho has been visiting relatives and friends. The ladies of the Trinity Church Guild will cive a cooked food sale Saturday from 1 p. m. to 6 o'clock at Ashland Trading Co. Mrs. E. J. Soxsmlth entertained the members and guests of the Pleasant Hour Club at her home on Allison street Friday afternoon. The warm sunshine out of doors and the profu sion of beautiful cherry blossoms with which the house was decorated made the, guests feel that summer was indeed here. Each guest was requested to tell some humorous per sonal experience, or funny story and the many amusing incidents thus re lated made a very pleasant afternoon pass all too quickly. Miss Shaw fur uished several selections on the piano, after which the hostess served light refreshments. E. S. Waterman of Ashland waB called to Bonner's Ferry Idaho last Friday by a telegram announcing the Aurder of his father, a man aged seventy-two years. A. S. Waterman was shot in a line fence dispute by Andrew Aldrich, aged sixty-six. The murderer gave himself up and admit ted that he shot in a Tit of rage and not under necessity in self-defense. The killing was done at long range with a thirty-thirty Winchester as Waterman was working along the dis puted line fence. The dispute had been under way for several years. A survey had been made, but Aldrich was dissatisfied and refused to accept it. Aside from his 'dispute the two families had always gotten along well and it is stated that the sons of the two men are still friendly and mutu ally afflicted over the sad affair. E. S. Waterman, wno came to Ash land nearly two years ago, was a wealthy young rancner in itorth Da kota. He has spent his time here prospecting and developing mines in Northern California and had only re turned from the mines a few days when he got the telegram. He has made many friends here who will re gret to learn of the sad circumstances of his parent's death. '. ' ...... .. . r- tlls-. ;: ' . The annual meeting of the Wed nesday Afternoon Club was held at the home of Mrs. Van Sant yesterday, the assisting hostesses being Mrs. Harner and Mrs. Atkinson. The fol lowing ladies were chosen ' to serve for the following year: President, Mrs. O. J. Stone; vice-president, Mrs. O. Winter; treasurer, Mrs. J. K. Choate; secretary, Mrs. A. Schuer man. The reports of the treasurer and secretary showed a profitable year, financially as well as socially. They were especially favored by a reading as an enc re by Miss Nellie Briggs and two piano solos by Miss Edna Daugherty. The ladles of the Civic Improve ment Club are very much interested in the mineral springs development and will assist the committee in their work during the next few days. If the men of Ashland were as interest ed in the development of the city as the ladies the city would double its population in two years. Mr. and Mrs. V. O. N. Smith en tertained at a charming 1 o'clock tinner on Sunday. The table was decorated in hyacinths aud fern, and four-course dinner enjoyed. The gnestB were Mr. and Mrs. Carson and sons, Verner and Raymond, . Mrs George Sleraantel and daughter, Mar garet, and Mr. Fowler, the former partner of O. V1. Carson.' A number of friends of Miss One Sta Barnard gave her a very pleasant surprise party Friday. An enjoyable .evening was spent in games and mu sic was provided, which all thorough ly enjoyed. A more congenial and lively crowd of boys and girls could not be imagined. The time passed quickly in dancing and games. Refreshments were served of Jello and whipped cream, cake and lemonade. The Ashland military boys are happy in anticipation of seeing the fair next year. If recommendations of Adjutant-Geiferal Finzer and the commissioned officers of every com pany in the state are followed by Governor West, the Oregon National Guard will hold its annual encamp ment in 1915 at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. The California trip has been defi nitely recommended. The fact that the governor has always followed the recommendations of the officers in the past is taken as an indication that the trip will be taken as proposed. Do you want to be "one of 300"?
