It often happens that we have faith enough iu the medicines put up by other people to be willing to offer to refund the money if it does not cure, said Druggist McNair to one of his many customers, but I am glad to sell Dr. Howard's remedy for consti pation and dyspepsia on that plan. The Dr. Howard Company, in order to get a quick introductory sale, au thorized us to sell the regular .10-cent bottle of their remedy for half price, 25 cents, and although we have sold a lot of it, and guaranteed every package, not one has been brought back as unsatisfactory. We are still selling the sjiecific at half price, although we cannot tell how long we shall be able to do so. Any person who is subject to consti pation, sick headaches, dizziness, liver trouble, indigestion or a general played out condition ought to take advantage of this opportunity. If the remedy does not cure them they can come right back to our store and we will cheerfully refund their money. Old Game Being Played. About 25 years ago many eastern people were swindled by a party of promoters in Sioux City, Iowa, who sold worthless tracts of land to stool pigeons for extravagant sums and took large mortgages back, then sold the mortgages. The alleged purchas ers were of course men who were ex ecution proof and the man who bought the mortgage was left to bold the bag. Recent press reports are to the effect that the same game is being tried in certain places iu the west, There is some firm of supposed or actual financial standing which passes upon end "approves" the mortgage, but does not endorse" it and which can in no way be held, or at least could not in those days, though modern precedents might bold them for conspiracy to defraud. BENEFITS liOCAL PEOPLE. KtlUy mm Winter Picnics Held Sunday Sunday was certainly an ideal win ter day and was enjoyed to the full est, many parties taking advantage of it for trips to various placeB by automobile. Butler Helnian, the Patton broth ers and Albert Powell made up a party which visited Butte Creek above Eagle Point, on a fishing trip. M. K. Biigss. J. W. Sweeney and A. C. Kiggs made a trip into the same section of the country with a like intent. W. B. Penniston, K. ('. Payne, S. A. Carter, William DeWitt and 15. W. Talcott visited Eagle Point, Brownsboro and the region round about on a quest for agates, with reasonable success. They found every appearance of thrift and progress in that section of the country and to one at least it was a revelation to see the beautiful homes which one would come upon so suddenly on al most a moment's warning. A notice able thing in southern Oregon is the number of people who think of beauty in building their country homes. Even though small and perhaps cheaply built, the owners seem to have had artistic tastes and attempt ed to make home pleasant as well as com fortable. Eagle Point has many more tasty homes than many a village of much larger size and is very picturesquely located on the banks of Butte Creek. One of the neatest places seen on the trip was the home of William Butler, on Butte creek, just below Brownsboro. Mr. Butler, who is well known at Ashland, having formerly owned the Butler ranch adjoining Fred Herrin's, has a beautiful place on Butte creek, with an up-to-date bungalow home and good outbuild ings. The place was formerly owned by Benton Bowers and has a good acreage under the plow. There are also some fine orchards aroung Eagle Point and Brownsborough and be tween the two villages. Even the "desert" between .Med ford and Eagle Point is being made to blossom as the rose. Many of the places are being beautifully fixed up, while others are as hideous as a Da kota homestead shack. The most beautiful view secured din ing the day was on the way home, just as the sun was setting. Mt. Pitt, a perfect pyramid of snow, tow ering hundreds of feet above the snow line, and Mts. Ashland aud Wagner, wooded to the summits but filled with rugged grandeur and cov ered with snow, were bathed in the roseate glow often seen at eventide and made a picture will will remain with the mind an long as mind lasts. Several cameras were with the crowd, but were useless to try to preserve such transcendent beauty. WAUNKK CREEK ITEMS. Most of the people of this vicinity, including the school children, were at Talent Thursday forenoon to see the demonstration train. F. W. Combs and family were in Medford visiting relatives on Thurs day. A meeting of the citizens is called for Saturday night, February 21. for the purpose of discussing the ques tion of putting in manual training, domestic science and music, in the school the coming year. On Thursday afternoon appropriate Lincoln day exercises were held at the school house. The boys have lately rearranged the basketball grounds and put up the baskets which were blown down. Mrs. Frank Kerby met with a slight accident Tuesday, from a fall ing tier of wood. Her injuries consist chiefly of bruises. F. E. W. Smith and John Kent took the initiatory degree In the I. O. O. F. lodge Wednesday night. Carl Rose of Ashland has been vls- j iting his sister, Mrs. F. W. Combs. Everything is baseball at the school now. Mr. A. L. Winier has been looking for a horse the past week. Onle Winter and Byron Keith ex perienced quite a lot of fun in break ing a young colt to the harness and saddle the fore part of the week. Did Xot Take Own Medicine. It Is a common rule for saloon keepers to refuse to employ a bar tender who drinks, but it is not often that a firm sends a man out to sell goods that he does not purchase for his own store, but the Mail Tribune gives the following Instance of one: "After showing his wares and be ing politely Informed by one of our bulsness firms that they had been In business for years and never give anything as premiums, not even trading stamps, the salesman told the members of the firm that he, too, owned a store for years and never, gave a premium of any kind, but his business Is selling them." Seal receipts a,t Tidings office. Mail Tribune: At a meeting of the parents and teachers Friday af ternoon a resolution was adopted asking that a number of lots, located on South Oakdale, belonging to the school board, be graded and made into an athletic field for the beuent of the lo.al schools. Ur. E. It. Seeley was Instructed to confer with City Engineer Olin Arnspiger regarding the work, which is to 1m started April 11. A team will be hired and the work will be done exclusively by the echool buys. A large fence is to be built iiroiiml the field. A good athletic field has been the schools' drawback. This is particu larly true or the high rchool. It is the opinion oi" the faculty that Md ford should turn out winning teams. Medford has the material; all that is needed is: a good athletic field. Sonic thing to induce the students to take part in athletics is what we want, says Superintendent Collins. Mr. Collins further states that the school directors will not be eluded for the step they have taken, but on the oth er hand will be preised. It will go a long way in advertising the city. I'iuds Curiosity on Homestead. Guy Wilbcrger, a homesteader near Rogue River, was recently exhib iting in the city a curiosity in the shape of a buck's antler that has been thrust through a black oak sap ling and broken from the deer's head. The antler had been in the sapling for a number of years, the oak hav ing attained a size of about three inches in diameter, and the wound in the wood made by the thrust of the antler having completely healed.
