Finley's Removal
On hearing last Wednesday that
Governor West has dissolved the
State Game and 'Fish Commission
thereby throwing W. L. Finley out
of the office of state game warden
150 Ashland sportsmen signed the
following document and sent it to
the governor:
"We, the undersigned sportsmen
of the state of Oregon, commend
your reported action of accepting the
resignation of the Fish and Game
Commission, thereby relieving W. L.
Finley of the office of state game
warden.
"It is our opinion that Mr. Finley
has done more damage and injury to
the fish and game interests than he
has done good, and we hope that in
selecting his successor it will' be some
one that will do more work in the
Interests of the sportsmen and less
for the Audubon Society. We as

The governor's action is variously
viewed. That he exceeded Lis au
thority in declaring the State Game
and Fish Commission abolished is the
opinion of some. In Ashland it was
viewed principally from the stand
point of what it would do to Finley,
who is unpopular with local sports
men. Local deputies under Finley
have received no official notice of the
abolition of the commission and are
proceeding with their duties as usual.
Mention has been made of Editor
George Putnam of Medford to suc
ceed Finley, but he states there's
nothing to it.

Prosecuting Attorney Kelly Makes
Statement as to Mrs. M alum's
Death.
Dr. J. P. Johnson, Ashland, Ore.
Myi ,pear Doctor: Replying
your favor regarding the death
Mrs. Mahan and the cause thereof,
will sayi
I was present shortly before Mrs.
Mahan died and that she made an
ante-mortem statement to me in !
which she stated that she had at-,
tempted to perform an abortion upon '
herself at least four days befor you ;
attended her. At the time of tbiaj
statement she was given to under-1
stand by the surgeons in attendance
that she was about to die, and her
statement was therefore made iu fear
of death. From the evidence I gath
ered at that time I was fully satis
fied that she had attempted the abor
tion as before stated some four or
five days before you were called to
attend her. I believe you showed
me a letter from her which set out
her condition fully and which called
you in attendance upon her. That
letter fully indicated to my mind that
the sapraenila, or blood poisoning,
which caused her death was then in
a very advanced stage. Also the
house surgeon is able to'say that this
sapraeniic condition was, present some
days before you attended her. I am
also satisfied that every medical and
surgical aid possible was rendered
after she was brought to the Granite
City Hospital, and that in view of
her condition at the time you called
upon her you acted wisely in having
her brought to the hospital.
I cannot possibly see, how any
blame or suspicion of improper or
unprofessional conduct can attach to
you in this case, and you are at lib
erty to publish this letter if you' so
desire. Yours truly,
E. E. KELLY.
