JAPS REPORTED DRILLING.
Said to be Maintaining Military Or
ganizations in California.
Sacramento, Cal., May 1. Adju
tant General A. E. Forbes of the Cal
ifornia National Guard admitted to
day that he "had heard" that Japan
ese in the northern valleys of the
state had during the last year been
organizing militia companies, or at
least associations whose activities
embraced military drill.
"It was brought to my attention
only recently that at Florin two
Japanese companies were drilling
from time to time, that another com
pany had been formed in the Napa
valley and other sections," said Ad
jutant General Forbes. "It was a
little over a year ago that the Japan
ese generally in this section of the
state began organizing associations
whose interests and motives were
maintained behind great secrecy.
Ever since then information has been
coming to this office of Japanese
companies engaging in drill maneu
vers." The Japanese population of Florin
and vicinity is considerably more
than one thousand.
Cows Should Do the Keeping.
Why do bo many find but little
profit in dairying? Because they do
not go at it right. They have the
wrong kind of cows cows that they
have to keep, instead of the cows
keeping them. Too many keep cows
whose milk and cream only bring
$30, $40 or $50 a year each, instead
of $100 a year as she ought to.
Again, many do not take proper care
of their cows; they let them stand
out in the cold rains in which
event the cow gets even' with her
owner, for instead of using her food
for the manufacture of good rich
milk, she uses it for fuel with which
to make heat to warm her body, and
to evaporate the rain from her hide.
Too. many think that if they give
a cow a wad of stuff to eat they have
done their duty, regardless of wheth
er it had any milk-producing value
or not. Ed. T. Judd.

Superintendent Adanis to Remain at
Gold Hill.
Superintendent Burt A. Adams
will remain in the Gold Hill schools
another year. The board of direct
ors at Central Point tendered him

crease of salary over what he re
ceives at present, and Professor
