English folk are shy of buying peaches, which they have learned to look upon as a luxury, says Harper's Weekly. That this is so is not to be wondered at, in view of the high prices that the home-grown fruit commands. Hothouse peaches, for example,, fetch at retail as much as $3.60 to $6 a dozen, and even the outdoor fruit costs from $1.50 to $2.50 a dozen. On the other hand, consignments from the state of Washington sold at retail in the London market lately at 60 cents a dozen, while Colorado peaches could be bought at retail for as little as 3 cents apiece. American apples have found a market in England, where people j ask for them as a matter of course. There seems no reason, therefore, why the imported peach should not become equally popular, as the en joyment of the fruit will thus be made possible by those who find the home-grown product beyond their means. Its advert also would be welcomed in hotels and restaurants for ' the preparation of dishes In which the f -uit forms part. Another effect would be to prolong the peach season. At present the fall market depends largely on the outdoor fruit, the supply of which is made doubtful by the uncertainty of the climate. American growers, accord ingly, see prospects of a good mar ket in England now that people there begin, to realize the compara tive cheapness of the imported peach. In 1 850 the average farm in the United States consisted of 202.6 acres. In 1910 the average farm numbered only 138.1 acres. This would seem to show that "bonanza farms," vast cattle ranches, etc., are succumbing to the tendency toward intensive cultivation 'on a small scale, and that the movement toward consol'dation, so marked in business, has been reversed as far as agricul ture is concerned. ,' Mother Fletcher is one of the po lice matrons of Philadelphia, and re cently she celebrated the 26th anni versary of her entering the police force. Moving Picture Plays NATIONAL AUTHORS' INSTITUTE Boy Gets Big Returns From One Potato. A lad in the outskirts of Albany, New York, and only 12 years of age, has made a world record. The state fair board offered a prize for the largest yield from one seed potato. Each contestant was furnished one potato of a special and unusual va riety in his part of the state. "Eugene Durand raised and exhib ited 686 pounds or potatoes, 12 bush els, of contest quality and size, and left at home, unweighed, about two bushels of non-exliibitable size. So far as known, this is fully twice the yield ever before known f'om one potato. The potato had 14 eyes. Each of these was planted in a hotbed. When the, sprout was about throe inches high he cut it off and plated it in sand, where it took root. Durand then set it out in soil a lapted to potatoes. The sprouts kept on grow ing, and he kept on rooting them and then transplanting them, :ind great was the harvest thereof. Baltimore houiiewives are forming leagues to war on shortweight deal ers. The bones of the average man weigh 14 pounds. DANGER IN DELAY Kidney Diseases Are Too Dangerous for Ashland People to Neglect.
