JUNE WEATHER SUMMARY Dwight Rice was shot and killed by H. P. Walter at Leland in Josephine county, Saturday evening. The story, as heard by the T idings reporter at Leland is as follows: Rice, the dead man, and Walters were married to sisters. Rice abused and maltreated hie wife, who applied for and was granted a divorce from him lees than a year ago. In the divorce case Mrs. Walters was a witness for her sister in court. Since that time Rice has taken every opportunity to villify and insult Mrs. Walters by abusive language. He had, naturally, been drawn into a quar rel with Mr. Walters over the affair, and had at times threatened to whip or kill him. Walter (who is a quartz-mill operator and has worked at the mines of John C. Lewis in Josephine) lives with his wife at a cabin just across the railroad track aud a few rods from Leland station. Saturday evening about seven o’clock, Rice appeared at Leland, under the in fluence of liquor, and sought a quarrel with the Walters family. He stood near the railroad track and called for Walters to come out and see him. Walters paid no attention to him at first, but finally went outside his cabin and requested him to keep still or go away. Rice poured out a volume of vituperation and threatened to kill Walter, flourishing a pistol. Walter went into his bouse and took up a 32-caliber Marlin rifie, with which he appeared in front of the door. Rice dropped behind a log or stump and appeared to be trying to get a shot at Walters from cover. Finally he rose and talked threateningly agaiu. Walters warned him not to come any nearer, but Rice began to advance, just as he raised his pistol as if to shoot, Walter fired and Rice fell dead. The bullet entered the body in front below the waist and lodged iu the spinal column, the severiug of the spinal cord causing instant death. Geo. P. Furman, the depot agent, G. L. Hale and W. S. Barney saw the whole affair from the railroad station. Coroner Kremer, District Attorney Benson aud Sheriff Hyde, took the night freight from Grants Pass, aud the coron er’s inquest was held early ou Sunday morning. The jury was composed of James Stewart, Fred H. Briggs, C. D. Burnett, Alex. Gage, George Anderson and John Murray. Mrs. Walter aud Messrs. Furman. Hale, Barney and Wal ter were examined as witnesses aud the jury promptly exonerated Walters by rendering a verdict which declared the homicide justifiable, it being clearly in self-defense. Josephine county is having more than her share of murders this year, there be ing now held for appearance before the next grand jury three men charged with murder, the Brownihg brothers, who killed a man in a quarrel over a mining claim at the head of Grave creek, and old man Fiester, who deliberately drowned his wife in a small pool of water beside the railroad track a few miles north of Grants Pass one day last month.
