A meeting of citizens will be held at the city hall tomorrow (Friday) evening at 8 o’clock to further consider the Klam ath road project and to bear tbs report of the viewing and other committees. As large an attendance as possible is urged. Krady, the Train Robber. Meager reports have been received of an attempt to capture Brady, the S. P. train robber who escaped from the bold up in which his partuer in crime and Sheriff Bogard were killed. A fight is reported to have occurred between Brady aud the officers iu Tehama county yes terday, Brady being badly wounded but escaping in the brush. Express Withdrawn Again. The late frequent recurrence of stage robberies on the route from Ager to Klamath Falls has resulted in Wells, Fargo A Co. again withdrawing from bus iness over that line and the closing of the express office nt Klamath Falls, the only one in that country for some time. The express company withdrew from business over a number of stage Hues in northern California aud ¡Southern Oregon a couple of years ago, but to accommodate the Klamath county people who have no bank, reestablished their service from Ager to Klamath Falls. Clear the Infested Orchards. Levi Morris, horticultural commissioner for this district, comprising Jackson, Jo sephine, Klamath, Lake, Douglas, Coos aud Cuiry counties, who was in Ashland yesterday, is iucliued to lie a little wrathy at some of the owners of fruit trees who refuse to heed his general notice that all orchards infected with scale, etc., must lie sprayed. Mr. Morris thinks that Ash land fruit growers, with 2000 acres of trees at slake, ought to lie particularly interested in seeing the provisions of the new law enforced to the letter, and he cannot understand why spraying is neg- ,ected in a few instances here about Ash land, as he is satisfied it is. Mr. Morris has a large district to cover and he can not expect to make a personal examiua- tion of every fruit tree or even every or chard, especially when the funds at the disposal of the board are as limited as they are. Mauy are uuder the impres sion that the horticultural commissioners on their trips carry au ax along with which to cut down all infected trees, but such is a mistake, Mr. Morris says. The board’s mission is one of education as far as possible and it is assisted by the recent uew law passed to impress lessons learned through experience to be useful to the perpetuation of the gieat fruit industry. The commissioner wishes it understood, he says, that the law will be enforced, though he does not want to impose a hardship upou any one unnecessarily. The law is plain and if owners of fruit trees do not comply with it, h is.d u ties are plain in the case. Mr. Morris says that during the ship ping season he is goiug to station an in spector at Ashland, who will make an examination of all fruit offered for ship ment, and large or small orchards discov ered to be infected will be quarantined, which will entail au expense of 82 per day upon the owner for the pay of a keeper. Mr. Morris says that now is the proper time to spray apple trees for the scale, and he hopes that those who have not already attended to it will do so and save further trouble. Copies of the rules and regulations and the horticultural law can lie obtaiued upon application. These in clude the recipes for sprays and washes for all the diseases aud infections of leaf, limb, aud fruit. w •DIV * CREAM BAKING POWDER Most Perfect Made. 40 Years the Standard. PERSONAL. J. E. The viewing committee sent out over the route of the Ashland-Klamath Falls wagon road to meet with the Klamath people to discuss the road improvement question returned Tuesday evening to Ashland, leaving Klamath Falls at 7 a. m. and reaching here early iu the evening, making two or three brief stops en route. The result of their visit to Klamath is best told in the following report from the Klamath Falls Express of today of a mass meeting held there Monday evening. Under the heading, “Southern Oregon Wagou Road; Our People are in Earnest and W ill Join the March of Progress,” the Express says: Hand bills reading as follows were dis tributed Monday afternoon: - Mass meeting! All persons interested in the welfare and progress of Klamath county are requested to meet at the court bouse tonight at 8 p. m. sharp, to discuss the advisability of improving the South ern Oregon Wagon Road between Klam ath Falls and Ashland. Shortly after the appointed time a rep resentative meeting was called to order m the court bouse by V. A. Dunlap, who nominated J. D. Fountain chairman. The nomination being approved Mr. Fountain took the chair and J. G. Pierce was chosen secretary. Mr. Eggleston, the chairman of the Ashland committee, which composed in addition G. M. Grain ger, Robt. Garrett and Jesse McCall, ad dressed the meeting and outlined the ad vantages of the proposed improvements of the Southern Oregon Wagon Road in a very lucid manner which met with the closest attention of all present. He as sured the people that the Ashland com mittee were in communication with Wells, Fargo Co. and that in event of a stage line running between Klamath Falls and Ashland, an express route would be es tablished. He further said that they were chosen by the city of Ashland to confer with the people of this town with a view of establishing a good road, and a stage, mail and express route, and to re quest the people here to give what aid morally and in labor and money they could. Ashland will contribute 82000 and Portland and vicinity at least as much more, with g<x>d assurances of aid from San Francisco. J. W. Hamakar and O. C. Applegate next addressed the meeting and took a strong stand in favor of the proposed im provements. In response to a motion made and ap proved, the chairman appointed J. W. Hamakar, V. A. Dunlap aud G. J. Farns worth to select a committee to act in con junction with the Ashlaud committee iu laying out a route. Upon an approved motion, a finance committee was then appointee! to solicit subscriptions iu cash aud work to aid iu carrying ou the work. Dr. J. A. Larra bee, W. F. Arant, W. B. Grubb, O. C. Applegate, J. L. Hanks aud G. H. Harsli- barger were appointed. Robert Garrett addressed the meeting aud gave some valuable information about route, methods of improving and keepiug road in good condition. Mr. Grainger in a short speech stated the Ashlaud people expected to put most of the money ou this end of the road as they realized it was most needed here. Meeting then adjourned subject to call of chairman. We have latent wealth enough in the fertile valleys and on the wooded moun tain sides of Klamath oouuty to purchase all the possessions of Aladdin’s wonder ful cavern, or the magnificence of the court of Solomon. Shall we wait in idle ness for the world to open up our avenues of commerce, or shall we contribute our mite to the aid the outside world has al ready offered? A little from every man will amply suf fice. When the oommittee ask you to subscribe, put down what you can afford, be it much or little, and if all do their duty, the road will be an assured fact aud the county one step nearer the release from its mountain custodian, which is all the barrier between puissance and impo tence.
