Its members are divided into circles of from 5 to 20 families, who pledge themselves individually and collectively not to go in debt a dollar, but to pay cash for every article bought. Since dealers must put up the prices of their wares high enough to cover their losses on bad debts, they thus make honest people pay for their own goods and those of dishonest peo ple, too, which is unjust, not to say sin fu l In the case of the Cash Purchase association the members have this added amount taken off their purchases, get ting a discount on the goods they buy. They buy somewhat on the co-operative plan. It is claimed that from $60 to $80 a year is saved thus to each family be longing to the association. An initiation fee of $1 is charged to the applicant for membership. This goes into a fund for the help of any mem ber’s family that is in need. In such a case money for the support of the needy family is allowed for a month and in extreme emergency two months. The money is a loan, to be repaid without interest when the family becomes self sustaining again. There ought to be circles of the Cash Purchase association all over this coun try. It was running into debt that brought on the hard times. for Burns, D i n i n g C a r s on O trilen ICoute. Caked & Inflamed Udders. A man or woman who lives frugally, who takes sufficient of th e simple food they are made to subsist on and no more, who drinks the one n atu ral fluid, w ater, is fitted prK iarily to m ake th e best of life, th e strongest, the most active, the most enduring life. Presum ing hum an beings are b om of good and whole some constitutions, they are, except for acci dental destructive agencies, in a fair way to live five tim es th eir m a tu rity —th a t is, five tim es 21 years, the n atu ra l term of th ^ a n a t omical life—namely, 105 years, a term few reach, b u t which is attainable as a m atter of experience, and so attainable, as a m a tte r of n atu ra l law, th a t th e m ajo rity of men and women would a ttain it if they lived properly. A remarkable little instrument has been invented by Mr. J. J. Hogan of the psychological department of Yale college. The idea of the invention is credited to Professor Charles B. Bliss of the University of the City of New York. The main features of the little machine are a pointer and a pendulum. It measures the time between the incep tion of an intention and its execution in muscular movement. For instance, it will tell how long a time after a sound has reached your brain will be required to act in accordance with the sound. One of the experiments is this: A white disk is suddenly uncovered before a man’s face. The instance he sees the disk he touches a button on the ma chine. The little instrument measures exactly the length of time between the flashing of the white disk on his sight and the touching of the button. Thus it registers the swiftness with which the muscles obey the will and the swiftness with which one thinks. There is a great difference between the slow thinkers and the quick thinkers, and Mr. Ho gan’s machine measures this difference. It will take note of time down to 1-1,000 of a second.' Dr. B. W. Richardson of London gave, not long since, a lecture which he called “ How to Make the Most of Life. ” He thought we could make the most of life by in the first place getting good health, in which he was quite right. He believed, too, that everybody could have good health who lived right. Undoubt edly he was right there too. Living right, however, does not con sist in merely taking care of the hotly. The best physicians understand the great influence of the mind ar.d emo tions on the physical health. Furious rages, a malignant hatred, evil passions of any kind, as also persistent worry and fretting, will destroy the most perfect physical body that ever was bestowed ou a mortal. The mind should control the body. Unless the mind can control itself and its own emotions, then the body runs away with it and falls into disorder. The system man should pursue to live out his natural term of 105 years of life Dr. Richardson suggests in the fol lowing paragraph; DULUTH____ TO SOCIETY IM PERTINENCE.
