BREVITIES.
The B lockade South.
Railroad traffic on the S. P. between
Ashland and Dunsmuir has been block­
aded for several days p a st
No trains
have arrived from the south since mid­
night Sunday aDd it may be several days
yet before the road can be cleared to al­
low the regular trains to run again.
The greatest obstacle the railroad peo­
ple have had to contend with seems to be
a big slide 1000 or 1200 feet long and
from 10 to 60 feet deep—a regular ava­
lanche of snow and earth—th at came
down Monday in the Sacramento caDyon
about two milee north of Dunsmuir. The
avalanche raised Bad havoc with the rail­
road track aDd carried the W. C. tele­
graph line and poles almost into the
middle of the Sacramento river, necessi­
tating the rebuilding of the line on the
opposite side of the canyon temporarily.
The railroad company put a large force
of men to work at once to clear the ob­
struction, but to add to their troubles a
second avalanche came down on top of
the first, Tuesday evening. The monitor
hydraulic system used in clearing like
obstructions in that vicinity before was
brought into nse with additional machin­
ery sent up from the city, and the super-

A Dunsmuir dispatch says that the big
avalanche of enow came down from the
mountain weet of the river and just above
Upper Soda Springs. I t buried the
track 60 feet deep, and carried down ev­
erything in its path. Ii crashed into the
river and away up the other bank and
dammed the river till it ran dry below.
The material will have to be shoveled out
and much of it loaded on Hat cars and
carried away. Superintendent Cooley
says there is more snow on the road
above Sisson than there was in the block­
ade of five years ago. It is 8 to 10 feet
deep at Dunsmuir aDd 15 to 25 at Black
Butte summit, where the road rnns
around the base of Mount Shasta.
Sunday’s and Mondays’s south bound
trains due in San Francisco on the fol­
lowing mornings, respectively, have been
lying this side of Dunsmuir, one at Sis­
son and the other at Edgewood. The
train that left Portland for San Francis­
co Monday evening reached Ashland on
time but went no further south than here
and trains have been switching back and
forth between Ashland and Portland
since. A number of through passengers
on Tuesday morning’s train who did not
care to return to Portland and accept the
offer of the company to refund their fare,
have been waiting in Ashland for the
blockade to raise, a couple of tourist
sleepers and od 6 first class sleeper being
left on the siding in the railroad yards
here.
As has been the case during all the
troubles in the Mt. Shasta section this
winter the track over the Siskiyous is
unobstructed. Roadmaster Burckhalter
has beeD given full sway on this end, be-
iug his owu dispatcher in case of an
emergency, and has kept the snow plows
moving, never allowing the elements to
get the start of him.
The railroad company has not been
selling tickets from northern points fur­
ther sonth than Ashland for several days.
Some ticket agent made a mistake
though and three through passengers
arrived ou this morning’s train from
Portland, making a total of 26 who are
waiting here for a chance to go south and
living ‘at the expense of the railroad
company, most of them at the Depot
Hotel.
The weather has been favorable yester­
day and today, scarcely any snow or rain
falling in the blockaded division. How­
ever, the immense amount of snow in the
Mt. Shasta section may cause continued
interruption to travel.
A force of 350 men is at work on the
big slide and progress is reported in re­
moving it today.
Trains are running from San Eranciseo
to Red Bluff via Willows. Storm has
reached over California, resulting iu se­
vere Hoods in central and southern part
of state.

S. W. Clary, the Henley capitalist, has

Attorney W. M. Colvig was in Ashland
Monday accompanied by his daughter,
Miss Clara.
Mr and Mrs. D. L. Rice went down to
Portland on Sunday night’s delayed train,
to be gone a short time only.
Geo. H. Tyler, the photographer, went
down to Medford last evening to look after
his business there. Mr. Tyler now owns
the Wirth gallery at Medford as well as
the Tyler gallery in Ashland, both of
which were recently conducted by the
Wirth Photo Co.
A. J. Barlow, deputy collector of internal j
revenue, was up yesterday on official busi- j
ness. It will soon be in order for him to
call on the numerous people in this part of
the state who are subject to the tax im- j
posed by the national income law. At
least five newspapers in this connry expect
to escape the hardships this law works.
Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Parker expect to
leave Ashland for San Francisco sometime
within a week or ten days, to remain in the
city indefinitely. Mr. Parker has been
long in the hotel business at defferent
points along the Southern Pacific system
and has a wide acquaintance among rail­
road people and travelers. Both he and
Mrs. Parker express regret at leaving Ash­
land and their numerous friends here.
