Semi-Weekly Tidings MINING NOTES AND NEWS. Hotel Fire H orror in Seattle. A large two-story hotel of corruga ted ; iron walls, situated near the Northern j Pacific railroad depot in Seattle was fired by an exploding lamp Saturday morning at 2 o’clock, and the fiames spread so rapidly that ten or more people were burned to death. Ten bodies were taken from the embers, and it is thought others were still buried in the debris. As soon as the fire started efforts were made to rouse everybody in the house, but the flames spread so rapidly along the hall and up the stairways that many of the guests could not escape from their rooms except by jumping from the windows. There was delay in getting water started from the fireboat, and the building was soon a roaring, seething mass of flames. Besides the people burned in the build ing several are believed to have been fatally injured in jumping from the upper windows. One woman threw her 6- months-old baby from a second-story window into the arms of a policeman and then jumped down herself, escaping un hurt. The latest report is that sixteen bodies have been taken from the ruins of the fire. The details are horrifying in the extreme. The building was a genuine fire-trap and had been condemned. Its long, narrow hallways were difficult to traverse in daylight, and when full of smoke at night they were a hopeless lab yrinth to the victims. H.
