The register and receiver of the Rose
burg land office give notice.that the Ore
gon & California Railroad Company has
made another application for patents to
lands embraced iu its grant, extending in
some cases to the limit of the 30 mile in
demnity strip. This second list of pat
ents asked for this year includes many
thousands of acres mostly lying west of
the line of railroad and extending from
Oakland, Douglas county, southward to
the state line. Ashland is in township
39 south, range 1 east. In this township
and in those immediately adjacent to it
on the west are about 3000 acres for
which the company applies for patents.
This town is deeply interested in the
mining developments opening in South
ern Oregon and nothing that will dis
courage or check prospecting should be
permitted. If any of the lands for which
the railroad company applies for patents
in this region are mineral lands in the
meaning of the U. S. statutes they should
be so designated and be allowed to re
main opeD for location under the mining
laws. The notice for application for this
latest list of railroad lauds is dated Oct.
8, 1894, and the register and receiver
state that within sixty days from that
date, that is until Dec. 7th, “protests or
coutests against the claim of the railroad
company to any tract or subdivision de
scribed m the list, on the ground that the
same is more valuable for mineral than
agricultural purposes, will be received
