California is certain fy the paradise of the fruit, grower. A fortune can be made in ten years from a fruit ranch of eighty acres or even forty acres, mostly by auytxwiy blessed with that amount of goixl land. Now I will demonstrate Low any enterprisiug man with a very limited capital can also make himself and family very comfortable and even rich with ten acre« of Ixittom land if planted in French prunes or Petite Prune« d’ Orgen, which is the same thing. The trees mnst be grafted or bud ded on plum stock and lie one or two years old 1 prefer one-year-old tree«. They must lx» planted alxiut twenty feet apart, eo it will sake 100 trees per acre, (hxxl trees ought to I ms had for 20 cents apiece, or by the thou sand for 15 cent«. The holes must be dug from two to three feet square, ac cording to quality of the «oil. The fourth season after planting and even the third, if your trees have Ix-eii well taken care of, you will ole tain alxiut ten pounds of prune« to each trees, enough to initiate your self inbi the-drying business. The fifth year you will get alxjut sixty [xiund« to each tree; the sixth year, 120 pounds or more to the tree. Af ter that your trees are in full bearing, producing according to location and care, 150 to 300 pounds to the tree. The only trouble now is the drying of the prunes m a satisfactory man ner without «pending thousands of dollars in building driers. Driers are a necessity in Oregon or any other wet country, but here in California we can dry the French prunes to per fection without driers, sometimes in one week and more generally in two we^ks by following these instructions: l>o not pick the primes by hand, as they do nut ripen all at the same time, but in about three weeks. Begin to shake your trees toward the last of July, then every week after, and od the fourth time pick them clean. Now for drying. The only appara- tils needed is an iron kettle holding from twenty-five to fifty gallon« of water. To each twenty gallon« of water add one pound of the best American concentrated lye; have the water boiling, then take a wire basket of some kind—the home-made one will do best put twenty pound« of green prunes in your basket, dip them in the Ixnling kettle, let them remain there about one minute, or until you perceive that the skin of your prunes is cracked till over. Then take them out and lay them 011 a tray aud in a week or ten days, according to the heat of the sun, your prune« will lie dried enough to put them l<x>«e in any kind of lx>x holding fifty to eeven- tj-five pound«. The tray« can be made very cheaply (about 10 cents < ach) with four sawed redwood shakes three bt't long nailed on a very primi tive frame, by anylxidv who ever used a saw and hammer. Now when your prunes are all dried and you want to give them the finish ing gloss for tiie market, do as follows: T ill your kettle again with water, but this time uo lye is wanted, aud when the water is boiling Bleep your prunes in it with your wire basket for a minute till every prune is quite hot, then expose them to the sun for that day, ami the next morning you can pack them tn boxes or sacks as you prefer. This last steeping will make your prunes very dear and glossy, and will kill every insect and destroy their eggs effectually. If you follow the above directions you will turn out an article equal to the liest in the market anil will obtain the Ixist price. Now let us figure the cost and pro- ] COST. Although all the memliers of the Vanderbilt family entertain on a mag nificent scale, says a writer in the /.«- (lies’ Home Jouruul for October, they never permit their children to remain up late at night, are extremely careful in their education, and, in a word, are fitting them for life as well as any mother or father could do. It is one of the rules in all the houses of the Vanderbilts, that the children shall go to lied early and rise early. The little boys and girls are up before 7 o'clock 111 the morning. Their nurses imme diately take charge of them. Bee that they are properly bathed and dressed, and then they go down to breakfast, which is served at half past seven o’clock. It is an unpretentious meal, with plenty of fresh milk, eggs, oat meal, and a bit of steak or a chop that will add strength to their physique and color to their cheek«. After break fast there is an hour of study. There is something for these little ones to do at all times during the day. They go through tiieir studies systematical ly, and then, about half past nine, are taken out for a walk. They are allowed to romp iu the streets and in the parks to tiieir hearts' content. At eleven o'clock they are brought home, and 11 light luncheon of mtlk and bread is served, after which there are more studies-- either French, German or drawing -find then another breath ing spell it may I m - horsebnek riding, or a drive through the park and along the country roads. Back they all come al mut four o’clock, and there is anol her hour of study, and t hen they are t hrough for the day. They are al lowed to do just 11B they please until tea time, when, after their meal, they spend a pleasant hour or so with their fathers and mothers and others who may drop in to call. Promptly at 8 o'clock they are all in bed to sleep soundly, aud get up the next morning and go through the same programme. So it is not strange that all the chil dren of the Vanderbilt family are further in advance of tiieir little friends in the matter of education. For they study, study, study all the time. They are all fond of music and most of them can play on the piano. The girls are learning to play on the harp, and the boys are famous among their friends as violinists, and banjo players. If you were to see these children on the street, you would not for a moment suspect that they were other than children of parents in or dinary circumstances. They make no display at elalxirate dress. The eldest of Cornelius Vanderbilt's daughters is dressed plainly in little, pretty, cheap dresses without any braid or ornamen tation. She wears snug-fitting doth jackets, and the little cap that sits gracefully on her bead, could lie du plicated for a eouple of dollars. TOO LATE BY OVER A YEAR. THE TWO DANGERS.
