The narrow localism of feeling which ,

at least, by the geniality of friendly
intercourse anil a common view of the
broad, geueral interests of the state.
The convention to organize a state
board of commerce is the outgrowth
chiefly of the census revelations and
the entertainment of the press associa
tion by the people of Portland. The
shell of [tetty sectionalism has been
effectually cracked, ami the prime re
quisite for effective organized effort
for the advancement of Oregon- har
mony of action and spirit throughout
the state—is already secured.
The new board of commerce should

loyally encouraged aud upheld in
every community of the state.
An Earthquake shaken City
Granada (N icaragtia), September
Twelve thousand people, terror-
stricken by earthquake shocks and
the continued rumbling of the ancient
volcano Mombacho. have fled from
the city. At 9 o’clock on Sunday morn
ing, internal sounds, resembling dis
tant thunder, were heard, and almost
immediately the earth heaved violent
ly and has continued to vibrate at brief
intervals every since, shattering near
ly every house in the city of 15,000
souls.
Granada is built at the base of Mom-
bacbo, which has been considered ex
tint for centuries, no eruption bave-
ing taken place since the discovery of
the country. There is now a daily
dread lest the long closed crater should
open and bury the town in lava and
ashes.
A heavy shock came on Monday
morning that caused immense damage
cracking walls in all parts of the city.
One-story adolies are cracked from
ceiling to floor. The firmest structures
of masonry have also been injured.
Ten thousand people have left the
city by railroad trains alone.
