Following is a description of the monument at Plymouth Rock, which was unveiled with imposing cere monies Augnst 1st: Tbe monument bears tbe following inscription on the main shaft: "Na tional monumeut to the forefathers, erected by a grateful people in re- memberaDCe of t heir labors, sacrifices aud sufferings for tbe cause of civil and religious liberty." The monument is situated on oj^Mf tbe highest hills in Plymouth. Mw northwest of the rock on which the i pilgrims landed and nest of the an«*bor- age of tbe Mayflower. The cost was al »out iJi H),ikM). The material. Hallo well granite, consists of an octagonal pedestal, -to feet high, upon tbe center of winch stands tbe figure of Faith. 3S feet high. This rests with one foot on Plymouth Rock, holding the right hand Ufsin a Bible, while the left hand uplifted, points heavenward. Tbe laaleetal lias four large and four small faces. Upon the large are tablets bearing the names of tbe founders of the Colony and historical facts. From the smaller faces project four buttres- sesorwing pedestals. Upon each is seated a figure iu heroic size, repre senting Morality, Education, Free»lom and Law On the faces of the pedes tals nre the representations. “The Em barkation at Delft Haven," “The Sign ing of the Social Compact hi tbe Cab in of the Mayflower." "1'1:0 Imxiing at Plymouth,' and "The Treaty with tbe Indians.” The memorial wns stnrted in 18.53 aud tbe corner-stoue laid iu 185‘J with elaborate ceremonies. The expenses of the monument were paid by the States of Massachusetts ami Connecti cut and in personal donations. Con gress appropriated 915.01)0 for the tig- ure Freedom aud its pedestal.
