ASHLAND TIDINGS. RREV ITI ES. School began in the new Soda Springs district last Monday with Mrs. Ella Nickerson as teacher, and an at tendance of 20 pupils. The taxpayers of the district at a recent meeting voted a tax of ten mills to build a sclvxil house and a g<xxl building will lx> erected. For the present sch<x>l i’ held in a house tendered by P. Powell. Street Commissioner Patterson is making a vast improvement in the ap pearance of the streets in the eastern part of the city by grading for the first time four streets in the railroad addition 5th street, 7thstreet, B street and 1) street. The grading is done with the new road machine, which does a vast amount of work in a short time. M. L. McCall has lx»en appoints«! administrator of the estate of Alexan der Shearer, deceased, and publishes the required notice to creditors. Mr. Shearer was a tindge builder of the N. P. R. R.. who investtsl in property in Ashland several years ago. intending to make this place his home. He was kil)e«l in an accident when nearly ready to move to Ashland. Messrs. G. W. Nichols and D. Tyrell have bought of David Payne the meal market and fixtures, implements, slaughter (««ns and giaxl will of the business owned and carried on by Mr. Payne, and took charge of the market last Mouday. The gentlemen are cat tle raisers who have a large quantity of fine fat beeves on hand, ami cati supply from their own herds abund ance of choice Ixx»f for the tra«ie. The Young People’s Methodist Al- lianeo will meet in the chapel in the rear of the Methodist church every Friday evening at 7:30 sharp. Pro gramme for next meeting: Quartet, Misses Thornton and lhiwning, Messrs. Walsworth and Stone; reading by Mr. Walsworth: declaration. Miss Smith; song by stxuety; oration, .Mr. Hawkins: reading. Miss Stowe; duet, Misses Thornton and Downing; essav. Miss Ollie Freeland. Patsy Cardiff, the celebrated pugil ist, accompanied by theex-tighter. Don aldson. Cardiff's pri«sent manager, was on the south bonnd train last Sunday morning, and during his 30 minute visit in Ashland, was the center of at traction to the deiHit visitors on hand that morning. Cardiff was going to San Francisco, where he is lxxiked for a tight with Jackson, the colored cham pion who whippet! McAuliffe, on the 26th of this month. J. J. Strait, of the Ashland House, is preparing to erect a two-story brick building on Ins lots on Main street. It was his intention first to put up a building on the vacant ground between the hotel and the barber shop, but a boutis of $5oi) has lieen offered him by property owners in his ueigldxirhixxl if he will build a two-story brick 66 feet front, to take the plain of the old hotel, and he will probably do so. A gixxl brick building there would lie a vast improvement for Main stn»et and make the business part of the city look mill'll lietter than now. Under County Clerk Muller, the rec ords of the probate court and commis sioners' court are kept more in full than heretofore, and a new feature has lieen intnxluced by deputy clerk Buffer. The records now show by the number of every piece of county scrip issued, just when, to whom and for what the scrip is issned since Mr. Muller took charge of the office. Had this plan lxx»n followed in the past it would lx» possible to figure the financial condi tion of the county more easily and much more accurately than can lx> done now. A youud man named Davis, who had arrived recently from West Virginia, was taken with a cataleptic attack on the stairs of Masonic hall last Wednes day, aud for several hours was appa rently in an alarming condition. He was taken into Smith A Son's store, aud given careful attention, tinder di rection of Dr. Pareon, who was sum moned, and after r. few hours was able to lie taken to his room down at the Arlington hotel. lie was overcome with carbonic acid gas in a well once, and has Ixsui subject to such attacks since.
