Journal of Commerce, March 19.1 The building and completion of the Oregon and California Railroad opened to tbe emigrant and investor regions of gaoat resources of wealth and fertility of soil which bad been previously comparatively unknown, and were de barred from the benefits of develop ment by the difficulty of access and lack of transportation facilities. Prom inent amongst these regions is tbe Rogue River valley, in Hou them Ore- gou, which has a climate almost semi- tropical iu mildness and equability of temperature, a soil unrivaled in fertil ity and productiveness. At the head of this valley, and ou the line of the Oregon A California Railroad, is located the growing aud promising town of ASHLAND, $2 OO . 1 Ml Of JU dMoriptions done on short no tioei’LeCHl Blanks, Circular«, Busi nessCards Billheads. The Astoriau makes the following grumble, which is applicable to Ore gon generally: It is eort o’ humiliat ing for ono who is a zealous advocate of Clatsop county’s resources, to make the rounds of Astoria's stor«« looking for fresh butter only to hear that “the California steamer isn’t in yet.” As if it would make a bit of difference to an Astonan wanting butter if the Caliornia steamer never got in. But it does, and California butter is eold iu large quantities, in the city, not be cause of its quality, for it le'never first rate, but it is sometimes the only but ter one can get. We have a climate that is the ideal for a dairy climate, land growing sweet, nutritious grass, plenty of money can lie made at the business, and yet butter is imported from California, inferior every way to butter that can be made right here. Nor is this all. Clatsop county, in the place of importing butter from Chi cago and Wisconsin aud Iowa, ought to be sending butter there. When Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin are three feet under snow aud the rivers of theee states, are, some of them frozen solid to the bottom, we have dear sky, warm sun and green fields. Fresh grass butter would meet with ready sale six months in the year iu those states where one has to work hard seven months in the year to live through the other five. The writer was raised in northwest Iowa where he bad to feed stock hay Hnd fodder from November 1st to April 1st. A piece of fresh butter there in the winter time was a luxury. We of Catsup county ought to be sending fresh butter back there six months in the year at a hand some profit instead of buying oleomar garine for Iowa “<*reamery,” and wait ing “for the steamer to come iu from California,” We have great natural resources, unequaled soil aud climate, a section that is preeminently a dairy country and in this one item of butter alone there is big money for the thrifty and enterprising. A kettle has been procured of a capacity sufficient to boil 311,000 ¡Minnds of soap a week, aud in addition 20,000 pounds a week will be made by the cold process. The sample boxes made by the presiding chemist, Joseph Kuerten, have brought numerous orders, one Portland firm alone having ordered 5000 boxes. About eight men will lie employed iu tbe soap factory.
