One day last week some reckless in­
dividual, not having the fear of the

passed in to the captain of the La
Grande militia company, pertaining to
have come from the governor aud call­
ing for the noble warriors of that oonra-
geous company V) be on hands at once
at the Department of State hh a German
man of war was under full sail toward
San Franciscw Bay with intent to com­
mence operation« immediately upon
its arrival. The captain, with hurried
promptness, sounded the bugle call
"to arms” which was responded to by
all of the mendierB of the company
who showed up at tbedepot ill full uni­
form, ready to la' borne away on the
incoming train to the scene of carnage.
But about the time the train was due
the joke was divulged and the war­
like bind in are he I silently back to
headquarters in sad disappointment at
having lost an opportunity of show­
ing their valor ujmhi the held of battle
lu defense of their unlive shore, ami
to let tbe native Samoan know that
they were ready and wiling to pour
out their life bio al to right his many
wrongs. The tirst engagement of the
company has ended with honors to
them as it has shown that they are
