tine usually wind’s uj» with the words,
••.And t o toy vuk utin.',” but this is getting
to be pretty old. About the only words tb;it
can t>e u?-ol to rhyme with valentine are pine,
design, sign, line, line, entwine, wme, dine,
recline.
For distance take the first word,
pine. It take's the |nx‘t about thrsu minutes
to grind out the following:
Ob luaideu fair, with gulden hair
(Share, pair, care, rare).
Fur you with love 1 pine,
Oh will you grant that blessing rare.
And be my valentine.
If this weren’t so old it might do, but the
pout must striko something a little more
original. So bo turns to Cupid. Of course,
nothing really new can be written, but ho can
clothe an obi chestnut in a new burr, so to
speak. So » upid comes to the front once
more. Cupid is always associated with an
arrow, but nothing will riiyme with arrow,
except wheel!»arrow, which word wouldn’t
do at all, marrow, which is equally bad, far
row or harrow, which are worse, and care
oh, which isn’t good, tiecause it's two words.
So the poet turns bis arrow into a dart,
which rhymes with ort an<i heart, an J
evolves the following:
18tole into a wood one day
To learn young Cupid's art;
I crept up wh«*re he sleeping lay.
And took from him auart:
in tills, my valentine, I pray
'Twill touch your maidcu heart.
It seems ridiculous, don’t it, to put such
hallowed things as the g<sl of love, love
itself, valentines an I th*» rest into a machine
and grind them «»utf But that's what our
poet Las to do. But it is pleasant to think
that the verses w hich are ground out w ith
such regularity by the poor fellow—have
pity on him-are sunt by lovers all over the
land with such genuine siiverity that, though
they are machine made and warranted not to
corrode or rust, they nevertheless carry their
sentiment with them, and do a great deal to
help poor Cupid in the task w hich tho little
fellow has K t for himself.
