There has been a constant reduction
in the Southern Pacific Company's
pay-roll in nearly all departments
since the 1st of the present month,
and it is said that altogether thia sea
son nearly 2(XI0 name» have been
stricken ’rom the roll. Division sup-
erintendeuts are giving th» pay lists
the closest scrutiny, and they have or
ders to dismiss every man who is not
actually needed by the company.
Two large new eight-wheel locomo
tives from Patterson, N. J., have just
been added to the motive power of the
Southern Pacific.
General Superintendent J. A. Fill
more came back from Aahland, Or.,
yesterday, where he has been on a
tour of inspection of the California
and Oregon line. He reports the road
to be in tine condition all the way up
the Sacramento river and over the Sis
kiyou mountains. The only trouble
experienced of late on the new portion
the road as a result of the wo»ther
was a land slide near Moebra« Falls,
where a large quantity of cracked and
»eame«l rix'k liecame kxieened and wax
precipitated upon the track. This oc
curred on Saturday and occasioned a
ten-hour delay of trains. There Las
been very little «now on the Siskiyous
thun far thin season and therefore no
work for the snowplows. In an agri
cultural way, Mr. Fillmore thinks
that the couutrv along the line never
l«x*ke«l finer. The outlook was cer-
taiuly very bright for railroad traffic
as a result of the splendid crop pros
pects.
Over Sl.OOG.OOO has lately been ex
pended by the Southern Pacific Com
pany in a new automatic brake equip
ment for its passenger nnd freight
trains, aud the whole system, with the
exception of the Northern Division,
which comprises only alioul 350 miles
of track, is uow provided with this
mixlern railway equipment. Upward
of 15,000 freight cars, running on both
the Pacific and Atlantic systems of the
company, have been equipped at a
c«*t of 850 a car or about 8750,000.
Over 500 passenger, mail and express
ears have lieen equipped at the rate of
8100 a car or 850,000, aud the equip
ment of <¡00 locomotives at $380 each
cost $210.000. The Southern Pacific
was the first railway system of the
country to thoroughly equip its
freight trains with automatic air brakes
and no cars of foreign lines are now
run ou its tracks unless provided with
this class of brakes or with air pipes
sons to oonuect all the cars by the au
tomatic system.
