Is that not so? Destroyer's of Fruit Pests Received. [s. F. Chronicle, April lath.) A utimber of little bugs, hardly much larger than a good-sized flea, were received yesterday from South Australia by the State Inspector of Fruit Fests, W. G. Klee. They are known as parasites, and are now in charge of B. M. Lelong, secretary of the State Board of Horticulture. The parasites have been used suc cessfully in Australia for killing fruit pests, and they do it in an effective manner. They get in the body of a bug about ten times larger than them selves, burrow into its flesh and lay eggs in it. In a short time young par asites come from theiufested bug, who ! dies auN whose l>ody is soon so dried up that it can lie crushed into dust by the least pressure. Thus they destroy thousands of bugs that infest fruit They live from these bugs and will not touch fruit themselves. Those that Mr. Klee received yes terday were in a small tin liox. in which was placed some cotton, also with a number of large bugs for the little fel lows to live upon. When they arrived at the destination the l>ox was opened and it was seen that the parasites hail killed a large number of the bugs and but a few were left, and those very faint. Secretary Lelong told a Chronicle reporter that a petition would lie sent to Congress to see if these parasites could not lie imported into this coun try. "There are abont two dozen in the tin box,” he said. “Some of them probably have died while on the way from Australia, we have enough left for breeding purposes and will go into the business at once. I fee] confident that if we could only have these para sit»« in California they would lie the death of the tunny fruit p<<sts. I know they will do the work that it is said they will do, for just look here,” and Mr. Lelong lifted up a piece of cottou and showed the reporter the dead Ixslies of almost a dozen big bugs known ns the white scnle bug. The dead bodies were full of holes, where the parasite had entered and laid its eggs, the young parasites issuing there from. A Portland paper of 18th inst. says: In the case of Bogart et al. vs. Holla day, Judge Dendy to-day made a final decree ordering the sale of Ben Holla day's stock in the Oregon Real Estate Association, which comprises all of Holladay’s addition to East Portland, except what hits been dispose»! of pre viously to satisfy confe6se»l judgments of the plaintiffs against Ben Holladay, amounting to about $130,000. Among the list of creditors is George C. H. Hickox. assignee of Mr. White of San Francisco, whose claim is nearly $55, 000. Mr White loaned S. G. Elliot, Holladay's partner at the start of the OregoD and California Railroad, and whom Holladay froze ont, money to prosecute hie claims against Holladay, I making au assignment of what lie would receive. There are also claims of two legal firms here for upwards of $80,000. Some time sine«» $40,1100 worth of property was sold by consent to pay the claims of the Potter Stymus Manufacturing Company of New York and of »'ertain lawyers here. It is sup posed that the creditors will join in bidding in the property and by selling it in parcels try to realize the full amount of their claims. (JSTCALL AND EXAMINE THEM. ASHLAND DRUG STORE!
