Otto Hon lis, a native of Germany, who came to Josephine county thre« yeare ago, ibed at his home near Wil- derville recently from Bright's disease. He was unmarried. Work has been resumed on the Mountain King mine, situated on Powell s creek. A company of Eugene capitalists are doing the work. L. R. Roper who provetl up on his homestead Saturday last, informed us he was preparing to put out about 35**0 different varieties of fruit trees this spring, aud will continue the g»xxl work as fast as time will permit. H. H. Keisling, who has control of the old Knox mine by bond, on Apple gate, has [mt in a quartz mill, which is about ready for use. Two new county road bridges have been constructed iu the south part of the oouuty, oue across Chapman creek, and oue over Louse creek, near the Lanterman place. The high-water of the past winter carried away the old bridges. What is known as a “muley saw” was receive»! at this station from Port- lan»l a few dc.-s ago for J. D. Glidden, of Kirbyville. The saw will be run by wate;-power furnished through a fonr- mile race. The Oregon 1‘aelflc R. R. An Albany exehauge has the follow ing about the prospects of the O. P. IL IL: A mortgage on the road, rolling stock, bridges, iron material, river steamers, terminal facilities and steam tugs, real estate, etc., of the Oregou Pacific au»l the Willamette Valley 4 Coast railroad, in favor of the Union Trust Co. of New York City, was filed on the 23»1 in Albany, in the county clerk’s office in that city. This mort gage was given as security for 815,000,- 000. This lixiks as if there was to l»e some lively push along the line. Mr. W. M. Hoag, general manager, has dis- played great energy in the enterprise, which had and still has great compet ing obstructions tlirowu in his way. The road is finished to the foot hills in Linn county and work will lie rushed through tb>-state. Money bus beeu light with the company, aud the loan just negotiated will pull it out of the strait it has been in. The company has plenty of property along the line, 900,- 000 acres of land', all the tide and swamp land down the road, and nearly all the property at Yaquina City aud plenty of rolling st»x»k. There are two or three ocean steamships aud three rirer steamers besides tugs. The road is in as good condition as any other in Oregon. Smallpox iu California. The Yreka Journal of Wednesday has the following: The latest report from Dunsmuir is. that one of the three parties afflicted with small pox, died there labt week, but the disease is con- fiuetl to those taken down with it. Parties from below say there are oc casional eases of smallpox all the way along the railroad from Siskiyou to the Bay City, but every exertion is made by the railroad company and citizens to stamp it out. The recent heavy snow storm in the Mount Shasta neigbborboexl with eol»l weather since, has been rather un favorable for smallpox patients, but the weather is now getting warm aud pleasant, to check its spread, as the balmy spring temperature iscousidere»l the most beneficial in subduing con tagious aud malarial diseases. The Sisson Herald of the 13th 6ays: "After the malicious circulation of many contiicting re[x>rts regarding the proximity of the smallpox, we now have it, iu a well defined, conflueut case at L. 11. Wardwell's w»xxl camp, about one ami a half miles below town. Tuesday, Mr. J. T. Osborn, a person residing at Wardwell's w»xxl camp was taken sick. ;md Dr. E. C. Rhodes was called in attendance. On examining the cast», the doctor's suspecions were aroustxi and on Thursday he liecame confident that the case was one of well defined smallpox, of confluent nature. On first examination of the case, and supposing it to be smallpox, the doc tor gave Mr. Wardwell very plain in structions what to do, and how to do, to prevent the spread of the disease." --------- ----- A Reprieve for the Condemned.
