Re«*utly a man who was engaged in digging a well on his place in Langell valley, when down some twenty-two feet or more, struck a very singular forma tion. It was evidently the lied of an an cient lake, as the decayed vegetation bore strong evidence of having at one time lieen a tide swamp. In fact, the whole of that valley kxtks as though in ages gone by it has lieeu a lake, but the constant flowing of Ix»st river for thousands of years has lowered what is known as the Gap, and thereby drained this long-time- ago lake. Prof. J. S. Sweet returned on Wednes day morning’s train from Yaquina Bay, where he has been attending the State Teachers Association. • Mr. M. Bellinger, of Jacksonville pre cinct, and Mrs. W. G. Messrs. Anderson & Rojier have men at work running a tunnel and sinking a shaft to prospect the ledge discovered by Mr. Anderson recently just above his placer mines. Messrs. Lyttleton. Pennington, J. H. Russell, and Eggleston are proejtecting a quartz ledge at the head of Wild Cat gulch, about a mile northwest of Ash- They have taken out some gixxl rock, but the ledge is narrow where they are at work now -only about four inches wide. Piping has ceased for the season at the McCall & Anderson hydraulic mines north of Ashland. Miners ate still protqiecting for new placer claims in Josepliine comity. 'The owners of the “Hoi»e” ledge in the Wagner Creek district have had applica tions for the privilege of putting up a mill at their ledge, from two different parties. The Hope prospect« are rich. B. A. Knott, of the Willow Springs district, whom we mentioned as having an offer of $4000 for bis quartz ledge, has about 200 tons of the rock on the dump, which he will have w< >rked by the Brown mill near the Swinden ledge. Mr. Brown has made arrangements, it is said, to put up another five-stamp mill in the same neighborhood. A company, «»mpoeed of Wm. Naucke, Win. Bybee, John Hall and A. Brown have inaugurated n new enterprise and will engage in mining on Canyon creek on a large scale. A ditch will l»e dug, hydraulic pipe and a giant purchased and nothing left undone to make their dig gings pay. C. C. Beekman is having liis quartz mines on Jackson creek sun-eyed, and will probably have tunnels run and shafts sunk on them before long. We believe that good ore exists there in paying quan tities and hope to see the matter thor oughly tested s<xin. B. B. Reekman and Frank Huffer are engaged in making the survey. [Times. The character of rock in the Pilgrim ledge of the Wagner Creek Mining Com pany is reixirted as showing constant im provement as the shaft goes down, and this encouraging prospect has given a general stimulus to protecting and min ing work in the Wagner Creek district.
