rHE ASHLAND TIDINGS JULY », 1886. FRIDAY The Wheat Cron. I j , Sau Francisco Letter to Portland New s. | A San Francisco corresjxindent savs: Xbo new wheat crop has commenced to move in California and many speculations ¡ire beiug indulged in as to the protable yield this year. Oregon and California n re so closely allied in their commercial relations that a few figures, relating to wheat, taken from what are con- sidered the most reliable and unbiased estimates, may be of interest to those in Oregon who are watching the wheat movement. Estimates of the average range from 3,- (KMl.000 to 3^00,000. It is generally con ceded that 3,400,(1110 acres is not too high a figure. On this last basis the yield is put at 68.000,000 bushels, or in the language most common on this coast. 40,000,(MX) centals. Out of this 2,000,000 tons it is believed 300,000 tons will suffice for home consumption and seed, leaving a balance for export of l,700,0(M) tons. It is not pretended that these figures are correct, but it is customary at this season to give out estimates, and as such these figures must ta taken, and should they ta realized, this State will certainly ta Messed as regard to this ¡»articular crop. It will require an immense fleet of vessels to carry away the surplus. A reliable paper here says the rates of transporta tion have been eo much reduced of late y ears that large carriers have liecome a necessity. It is probable that the Cali fornia wheat trade gives employment to a greater number of large ships than any other port in the world. Vessels in the wheat trade out of this port carry on an average 2,500, short tons of wheat. In the season of 1881-2, which holds the best record for the harvest shipments ever known, it required .559 vessels to carry the wheat, which amounted to 1,239,(MX) tons. This year it will require some where in the neighborhood of 700 vessels to move the surplus. The figures above given or even a liberal discount on them are sufficient to stamp California as a mighty factor in the wheat market of the , world A Busy Prince. No man iu England pursues pleasure more ¡«ersistently than the heir apparent to the throne of Great Britain. The restless activity of the Prince of Wales is simply amazing. A ¡>eej> at his month ly diary of engagements would appall most men. What with levees, drawing rooms, public dinnera, tails, presiding at musical exhibitions and Masonic meet ings, laying corner stones, visiting hospi tals, shooting off into remote shires to ¡ open docks, tunnels and bridges, assist ing at the erection of statues to statesmen, warriors and poet« what with these functions, to say nothing of looking in at horse, cattle and Hower shows, steam ing down to Osborne or Windsor to con fer with his Queen mother, and turning up promptly at most of the premieres at the dozen or so London theatres he inva riably attends, one would reasonably in ter that the Prince of Wides is not only as busy as the proverbial l»ee, but never has a minute to himself. Doubtless the partial retirement of the Queen throws a great deal of social routine work upon him, but he is equal to the demand. He tas been known to leave a tall at 3 a. m.. and be in the train equipped for a shoot ing expedition a hundred miles or more away from town the same morning at 9:30. But there is one evening of the week that the Prince reserves to himself, anil no amount of inHuence or intriguing will in duce him to engage himself to any for mal function no matter how important it I may ta, on that night. It is his “night off,” and on that occasion it is quite un derstood among his “set,” as his little knot of intimates is lenneiL that he is to enjoy himself san facon. He dines early with his family, and then the night is his own, and he usually visits his personal friends. Alfred de Rotliehild is the Prince’s most successful host. He is generous, cultivated, ¡ hmscsscs great wealth, and his fine house is a museum of the loveliest and costliest art treasures. He has the advantage of knowing most of the amusing people of London. He knows most of the pretty actresses and the reigning beauties of society, and all in good time he is made aware of the coming of bis royal guest. Now and again M. de Rothschild will engage a great violinist like Joachim, a pianist like Rutanstein. or a singer such as Faure or Capoul, to take part in the festivities. But in a genend way the performers are the honored guests of the host, and ex pect neither fee nor reward. GENERAL MISCELLANEOUS. NEWS. The total popular majority iu Nova Scotia for secession for Canada is 12,009. The appropriations in the river and harbor bill amount to eighteen million dollars. Cuba wants Home Rule. The demand is regarded as a Btep towards complete decent ralizatiou. Hobart Pasha (August Charles Hobart) Marshal of the Turkish Empire. died ill Loudon on Saturday. June 26. A lalsir convention to nominate a Pennsylvania state ticket has been called to meet at Harrisburg, Aug. 18. Bomtay, the 85.000 rhinoceros, which arrived at New York recently, died sud denly in that city on the 26th nit. According to the New York medical journal one-half the adult men in Ameri ca living in our cities are tald-lieaded. A bill has passed the senate promising a constitutional amendment extending the {»eriod of presidential term to April 30, 1889. One hundred and eight ships are uow sailing for the hartar of San Francisco, a majority of which come to carry away the heavy wheat crop. The Spanish Government is contem plating the immediate construction of a number of speedy and ¡»owerful cruisers to strengthen the navy. Senator Stanfor«l is conferring with College presidents iu regard to the plan for his University at Palo Alto. He has already ilispatched two bibliographers to Euroj»e to buy Imoks for the library. A national divorce law is one of the coming necessities. The conflict between State enactments is showu iu a recent conviction for bigamy iu the State of Indiana. One of the “captains” iu the Salvation Army at Harrisburg went off on a big drunk and w<as ilismissed from the “ser vice.” He proceeded at once to organize what he termed a “salvation navy,” not withstanding his antipathy to every kind of water but tire-water.
