THE ASHLAND FRIDAY TIDINGS JULY 2, 1886. I EDITORIAL MOTES AMD NEWS. Beecher is in England, ard will prob ably make some speeches for Gladstone. France has issued an edict expelling Princes Napoleon and Victor. They left amid cheers of long live the republic. Thu question aa to whether Vici elaud will bo a candidate for re-uouiination is assuming prominence in the press dis cussions. Collections of internal revenue during the first eleven months of the fiscal year ending June 30, 1886, amount to $107,- 104,485, being an increase of $3,402,836 over receipts for the corresponding period the previous year. D. P. Thompson, one of the most prominent Republicans in Oregon, has come out a prohibitionist. He couldn’t stand the whisky-ring combination that elected Judge Strahan to the Supreme bench as a representative of that “busi ness interest.” The Democratic Goveruor-elect of Oregon has written a letter to friends in Washington in which he Hatly says the Chinese question vas the only issue upon which the recent electoral battle w; as fought and won. The Administra- tiott question was not in the contest. Land Commissioner Sparks has ren dered a decision in favor of a settler who settled upon unsurveyed land which after wards was selected by the Northern Pa cific as indemnity land. The Commis sioner holds that the unsurveyed lands were not affected by the indemnity with drawal. LOCAL OPTION ELECTION. The last legislature of Washington Territory passed a local uptiun liquor law and the first election under it took place last Monday. The result has been await ed with unusual interest by the people of the Northwest, because of the new ele- > inent in the contest introduced by the enfranchisement of the women of the Territory. Extremists have urged here- j toforc that the women would vote solidly everywhere against saloons if they were given the privilege of the ballot, and the ! liquor interests have nearly everywhere been arrayed almost as sharply against the woman suffrage movement as they have against prohibition itself. The vote just taken in Washington Territory has shown that women cannot always and everywhere be depended upon to exercise all their influence and power against the saloon. In many places in the territory they cither neglected to vote, or else voted against prohibition, and the gener al result of the election is not more against the liquor interests than similar elections have been in states where the women are disfranchised. In the larger cities and in most of the logging, milling and mining communities the vote was | against prohibition, while in the ag- | ricultural districts the counties and towns i have voted to close the saloons. The i cities of Walla Walla, Tacoma, Seattle, Spokane Falls, Olympia, Vancouver and ! Port Townsend all voted against prohi bition by heavy majorities, but Dayton, Colfax, Chehalis and other Bmaller places gave majorities for prohibition. A total of 2610 votes were cast in Seattle, of which 1820 were against local option, making the majority of 1030 against, the largest recorded in any city. Ta coma camo next, recording 603 majority against, and Walla Walla followed with a majority of 424. Walla Walla county outside of the city was solid in favor of local option, and the issue carried in every precinct in Whitman and Lewis counties. ROUTE RIVER VALLEY. From a sketch by E. A. Swope in I Portland World of June 25th: One of the localities of the state of Oregon that at present is attracting like a magnet the emigrant, investor, miner and tourist is that portion of the state known as Jackson county and fre-' qucntly and justly called the “Italy of Oregon.” A ride on the Oregon & Cali fornia railroad of twenty-one hours land ed “your correspondent ’ at Ashlaud, the present terminus of the road, and the most southerly town in the state of Oregon. Jackson county is comprised in what is geographically termed the Rogue river valley, a region with ail area of about 1800 square miles. Its physical conformation is that of a rolling plain, 1 interspersed with oak-covered hills and granity soil well drained. The Rogue river valley abounds in scenery of the I most romantic character, such as a I Wordsworth might be tempted to wor i ship, as when he says: •'Therefore am 1 still A lover of the meadows, and the woods And mouutaius, and of all that we behold, I From this green earth, and of the mighty world - Of eye and ear, both what they’ half create, And what »receive Knowing that nature never did betray The heart that loves her!” Tho Rogue river valley is something more that English scenery, the glories of which the poets sing, and exercises a bolder imagination than evor hovered around the beauties of Windermere, or delight ed in the placid remise of the Cam or Isis. The elements of beauty may present a most perfect development elsewhere, but for those of grandeur in all its plenitude, lofty mountains, wierd lakes, splendid waterfalls, enormous precipices, and even sublime imitations of art itself, this beautiful southern valley of Orogou takes the palm. Through her beautiful vales and deHaaue can wander like “the pilgrim in the shadow' of Jungfrau.” The climate of the Rogue river valley is somewhat warmer than the Willamette, though the hottest days are seldom op pressive, owing to the cool winds that fail the air from the Cascade and Siskiyou mountains, the sources of its tempering zephers and limpid irrigating streams. For fruit cultivation this valley excells any other in the state of Oregon. The peaches are of the most delicious flavor, while the figs, apples, plums, prunes, cherries and pears are unrivalled. Wild berries grow in luxurant profusion on the mountain sides. The varied colors and blossoms of the salmonberry, thim- bleberry, Oregon grape, blueberry and I crowberry give the woods a most brillant appearance anil recall tropical luxuriance in a marked manner. The foliaceous trees of the Rogue river valley are more varied than in any other part of the state. The spruce, fir, cedar, pine and oak arc here, while an abundance of the madrona, ccanothus, arbutes, chaparral and manzanita grow in luxuriant pro fusion. The mineral wealth of the valley is very great and it is just commencing to receive the attention that its importance demands. Gold, quicksilver, silver, chromic iron, galena, gypsum, carbon- ate of lime and kindred minerals have been discovered in many localities. PROPRIETARY MEDICINE I GENERAL MERCHANDISE-GROCERIES —ETC.
