THE ASHLAND FRIDAY EDITORIAL I TIDINGS. . A NEW EXHIBIT. “The reduction of the county debt goes bravely on," «ays the “Times. It is a good ticket, and one which, from the character and stand- ing of the men upon it, will command respect, if it doesn't secure votes. If ; I ■ ! both the other parties succeed as well in . nominating met' against whom there can 1 be as little said justly, we need have no i fear about the offices being well filled. ♦ ♦ } The supreme court was a little “slow I on (he trigger ’ in its treatment of the ■ registry question. If we had only the Vilas mail facilities to depend upon, the , voters in Klamath, Lake and some of the ; other distant counties might all have 1 registered before the news of the decis- I The decision of the supreme court in the registry law case- came rather late, but is received with satisfaction, never theless. Tlie 1 tw did not meet with gen eral favor. By many it was considered a needless expense to the state, and the limited time given in which to register, as well a> the tequiremeiit of personal ap pearance of voteis Itefore the registra tion board, w ould have caused much m- convenience and dissatisfaction. One of the district judges of Iowa lias been impeached by the legislature for refusing to mantain the prohibitory laws in his decisions. The Iowa temperance people are not content with the mere en actment of prohibitory legislation. They are earnest enough to want it enforced, and evidently mean to give it a thorough test. Many of the leading and strongest newspapers in the state are uncompromis ing in their support of prohibition. The next killing frost on ' county can didates is due about the 17th, and will blight many a blossoming hope: another will occur on the 24th and kill oil’ a Large portion of the numerous buds of aspira tion in the Democratic garden, and in the early part of June, when the roses are blooming in their glory and beauty and the fragrant air is mild and balmy beneath the summer sun, the crudest frost of all will come, and kill just aliout two- thirds of all the crop that weathered the rude blasts of the convention days. Both the Republican and Democratic papers in Douglas county have offended some of the “thick and-thin” members of their respective parties by giving aid and encouragement to the Prohibition move ment. A large Prohibition tote will be polled in Douglas at the coming election, ..nd it is not impossible that some of the candidates on the county ticket may lie elected. It is impossible to judge now whether tlie strength of the new party will be drawn more from the Republicans than from the Democrats in that county, but it looks rather as if the reverse would be the case. 36,515.29 26,000.00 26,000.00 26,000.00 Says the Independent: We have learn ed th\t the dried fruit sent to the New Orleans exposition from here has been the means of giving this city and county another lift in reputation. A large col lection was made of some twenty different kinds of dried fruits, which made up a very fine case in the exposition. It was mostly furnished by A. W. Hidden, L. B. Clough and Gay Hayden, of this city. The case has taken the first award of the exhibition, in competition with the fruits of ten or twelve states, and gives this locality a big reputation for fruit raising. The award is the result due to industry ami enterprise. Is the only remedy that can be relied upon, in all cases, to eradicate the taint of hered itary disease and the special corruption« of the blood. It is the ouly alterative tliat is sufficiently powerful to’thoroughly cleanse the system of Scrofulous ’and Mercurial impurities and the pollution of Contagious Diseases. It also neu tralizes the poisons left by Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever, and enables rapid recuperation from the eufeeblemeut aud debility caused by these diseases. One of thu nmst interesting contests between organized labor and capital that have occurred within the history of our country is now in progress between the ! knights of labor and Jay Gould. The employes upon the Gould railway sys tem in the southwest have been on a strike for a number of weeks, causing I the almost complete suspension of busi ness up. n the roads. It was thought the first of the week that the trouble was ended, but telegrams the next day dispelled that idea. The Grand Master Workman of the Knights had a con ference with Gould, in which the latter assented to the proposition of the strikers that the differences between them and the company should be settled by arbitration, the strikers to resume work immediately—the company to give preference to late employes but to reject all who have injured the company’s prop erty during the strike. On the day fol lowing this conference, it was announced that there was a misunderstanding. Gould would not consent to an arbitra tion with the organization of Knights of Rabor, but only with the strikers as em ployes. This caused another delay, and reports still continue of the strikers ditching trains, disabling engines, etc., in Missouri. I The “official immensity " is very tender upon the subject of the district judge ship. The simple statement in a recent issue of the T idings that the people of the First Judicial District are well satis fied with the judge who now presides in their district court drew forth a solicitous growl from the anxious editor, and for several weeks the great concern has ap- parently been trying to intimidate the supreme court by declaring that if the decision in the test case should be ad- verse to the prospects of its family can- didate it will be obliged to denounce such decision as the result of partisan bias. The supreme court will, of course, be governed accordingly. The impor tance of being sustained by an immense “official’’ concern which spreads all over Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Like at rates which can't be equaled in the state “Outside of Portland,” is not to l>c sneezed at by the supreme court, unless the court pays more taxes that we sup pose it does. sent them.
