I THE ASHLAND TIDINGS MERCANTILE—MANUFACTURING—MISCELLANEOUS. Sugar Pine Lumber Company. of passion. The result was the ttnanim - i ous adoption of resolutions which must , commend themselves to the endorsement of every citizen of the State. These resolutions are not based upon race prejudices, nor do they propose im practicable measures. Opposition to the Chinese is declared to be on the grounds that the Chinese liecome political factors in the economy of our Government; that they do not contribute to the material prosjierity of our common country; that they neither build houses, encourage the public system, arm for the defense of the Government, sustain the institutions or forms of American civilization, assimilate with our people, share the burdens of Government, or contribute to the develop ment of the country or the upbuilding of strong, properous, intelligent and happy communities; that by their vices, their personal habits and adherence to semi barbarous systems they are incapacitated to become factors in the physical and in , tellectual conqxisition of the free State. They are also charged with practicing the vilest form of slavery and with being alien to our entire system of government, whose laws they evade, or only comply with under protest. The Sacramento plan for removing the evil is a comprehensive and practical one, and is so well thought out and de lineated that we copy it entire, as follows: Result'd, That the people of the city of Sacramento, here assembled in mass meeting, unite in forming an organiza tion, to be known as the Citizens’ Anti Chinese Association, of Sacramento, and that a committee on permanent organiza tion be appointed to report toan adjourn ed meeting to be held on tho 18th inst, and Resolved, That we do advise such com mittee to report a system which will pro vide a plan whereby a permanent com mittee shall be ap|*ointed to go out among direct employers of Chinese and among the business men, farmers and manufac turers of this city who, directly or in directly, handle goods made by China men. These committees shall use their influence to have such Chinese employes replaced by white workers, and such Chinese-made goods replaced by those made by white labor. We would further advise said committee to provide for an in telligence bureau where white domestics may be secured without cost to employer or employes, also a bureau of informa tion where white women who are prepared to do laundrying may register their names for the information of those who desire to give them employment in preference to Chinese washhouses. We firmly be lieve that a system such as is referred to in these resolutions, if made general, throughout the State, is the most effective and only present remedy against the Chinese evil, and we therefore earnestly recomménd the early calling of a State convention at Sacramento to devise ways and means for a more complete solution of a very important subject. M hen all classes tn a community unite in such a movement as is outlined above; and when there is no talk of compulsion and, no undue hast/? that community w ill soon reduce its Chinese to a harmless remnant, who may be retained in special position by reasons of peculiar- i?*uess or ltersonal attachments growing out length of service. The Sacramento plan is worthy of adoption by the whole State. M it uva STORE, THE FARMERS STORE. —ASHLAND— -Tv ■ Will l>e the future City of Southern Ore gon. An intelligent Indian, recently, in re porting the marriage of an Indian octo roon to a white man said: “If this pro cess goe~ on, we will soon have the whit est race of Indians you ever did see.” The accomplished daughter of the old missionary. Dr. Robertson, married a full blood Creek, says the Milwaukee Sentinel. Her sister has secured money at the east to establish a seminary among the full bloods, and it has been a question where the seminary could be located to meet th<»>bject auned at. Parties step ping from the train at Vanita, within the Cherokee Nation, the only- tai r ad ervs- sing in the Indian territory comtnonly ask: ‘ Indians ‘ Where are the ?” On be- ing told that those they __ ____________ see about _ them ate Indians, they reply: “No, they are not Indians. They are white men.” By marrying an Indian maiden the white man secures all the rights of In- dian citizenship. The '‘headlight’’ of the girl heljia the matrimonial contract. To hunters for land, those looking for wide ranges for cattle or agriculture, the temptation is very strong to take this short cut to get an extent of soil they could never hope to secure in any other way. The encouragement given to the whites on the part of the marriageable Indian females is quite observable. They think by marrying white men they gain social ly and have a prospect of an easier and better eared for life. And they think rightly. In all depressed civilizations women have a hard time of it. The In dian men do not like this constant raid ing through their land and capturing the most attractive of their race, whom they woo and wed, but they can not help them selves, anil retaliate by stealing the affec tions of white girls and marrying them. White girls entering an Indian reserva tion are soon picked up; not so often by full blooded Indians, but after the pro cess of inter-marriage has commenced, not so seldom by half breeds, quadroons and octoroons. White ]>eisons who tnarry into Indian blood almost invariably remain on Indian soil. The white man, in defense of In dian ideas of communal interests and In dian questions as related to the whites, becomes more intensely an Indian than the Indians themselves. I think the fiercest defenders of the tribal system are white men who, by marriage, have be come Indian citizens and are making money out of it. The large crops on In dian lands are invariably raised by white men Four-fifths of the mechanics are white men, brothen-in-law to the In dians. So on both sides the process *t dilution of Indian blood goes on until it becomes very thin, while Indian habits ami Indian characteristics still remain. The common notion among Indians is that Indian blood never runs out, and that, wherever the slightest trace of it can bo found, there the fullest lights of land and privilege foil >w. For a man who has one-sixteenth or one-thirty- second part of Indian blood the claim for his right as an Indian is asserted as strongly as for the full blood. A white ntan has married an Indian girl, light bloude, of one-tliirty-sec-ond Indian blood. His children will be one-sixty fourth Indian. The family consists of five members. Chi account of that one- thirty-second Indian blood that family of five, located on the bother of the Indian land, is entitled, by equal divi-ion of the tri’ -al land, to five times 995 acres, or 4,975 acres.
