TIDINGS ASHLAND FRIDAY OCTOBER 15. 1880. The Times accuses us of “falsi fying some of the best citizens” of Jacksonville in the statement that the President of the Board of Trustees of that place. Brigadier General Reames, refused to take measures to give a formal recep tion to President Hayes; and “io justice” to the General, says: “He wis never approached on the sub ject and not even informed as to the time when the party would arrive.” Ah.’ we see it now. Ye«, of course,, the General was anxious that the town should ex tend the ordinary courtesy'to the Chief Magistrate of the Nation, but, you see, he couldn’t be expected to do anything until he was “approached.” It was a great oversight of the President that no agent was sent ahead to “ap proach” the dignitary and beg for a suitable reception. And then he couldn’t possibly learn when the party would arrive. To be sure, a telegram was sent to Jack sonville from this place stating what time the President left Ash land, but then the telegraph office too, failed to “approach” the Gen eral, and he was left in Egyptian darkness. Explanations are en tirely satisfactory. But why should tire Times feel obliged to explain at ail? When it was an nounced that the President would come through Southern Oregon, that paper instructed its followers that it was their duty to abstain from any recognition of him as President, and the Jacksonville Town Board, ol which the editor of the Times is a member, certain ly acted consistently with that view. Has the manly, non-par tisan action of the public men of both political parties in other parts of Oregon made the Times ashamed of its hide-bound course? A bill has been introduced in the upper house of the Legislature to prevent discrimination in freight rates by the common car riers in the state. There is grave question of the justice and advisa bility of such legislation under or dinary circumstances, and while it might be of some benefit to the people of some localities, there is no doubt whatever that it would be directly against the present in terests of Southern Oregon. The effect of a provision of like pur pose in the recently adopted con stitution of California was to raise file price of freight on the railroad between San Francisco and Red ding. Should this bill become one of the statutes of Oregon the freight rates on the C. de O. railroad between Portland and Roseburg will be increased, and while the people of the middle and upper Willamette valley may obtain a slight reduction in freight it will be at the expense of the pockets of Southern Oregon. While the California and the Ore gon railroads were left free to ! compete for our carrying trade we were tolerably sure of reasonable freights, but if “discrimination” be utterly prohibited this section will be the loser. We need that Crescent City road. Wc may fa vor discrimination now, but if the raffroad should be put through from San Francisco to Portland, then we ourselves would be soon protesting against discrimination in freights, 1 he road to the coast is odr natural aud only safeguard against extortion from freight car riers. •z ---------- CJ ---------- - Col. George B. Curry, one of the car.didates for Presidential Elector on the Republican ticket spoke in Ashland last Monday evening to a large audience. In appearance and address Mr. Curry is plain and unpretentious, and while he is not a polished speaker he presents with clearness and force the arguments upon his side of the political discussion of the day. His speech was quite long, consuming over two Imurs in de livery, but was listened to with close attention throughout. He had more to say upon the tariff question than any of the speakers who have preceded him here dur ing the present campaign. He called attention to the plank in the Democratic platform which demands “a tariff for revenue only.” A tariff for revenue alone, he said, meant a very low tariff, jt is plain that the lower th« tariff the greater the encouragement to importations and, consequently, the greater revenue. American industries, unprotected from the overpowering competition of the pauper labor of Europe, would re ceive a death blow. Factories would be closed and thousands of artisans would be thrown out of employment. The people of Or egon and the people of this valley and this town would be among the first to feel the effects of the change. The price of wool would decline to the figures at which it stood years ago when the free trade policy of the Democratic party was in force. The Repub lican party has always fostered protection, while the Democratic party, both by its action and its declarations has always favored free trade. In speaking of affairs in the south, Mr. Curry said that he was born and had lived south of Mason & Dixon’s line; all his relatives were south of that line. He thought he could speak know ingly of the temper and senti ments of the people of that section; and he said it could not be denied that a Republican did not dare to express his views and sentiments there as freely and boldly as Dem ocrats may in all the northern states. A bill for a new apportionment of Representatives is before the Legislature. The last apportion ment was made in 1872, also by a Republican Legislature. As the law requires such apportionment to be made every ten years, and as ten years have not yet expired, some of the Democratic papers are questioning the legality of this bill, and erv “gerrymandering.” Ashland Lodge No. 189, L 0.
