The Portland Bulletin of the
8th bring«» to light the following
little episode of the past: Yes
terday’s Bulletin contained the
sworn evidence of Mr. Cole, in
which lie acknowledges, that in
conjunction with II. W. Scott, he
tried to buy off the Hon. J. II.
Mitchell for the sum of $25.000 in'
favor of Ben Holladay for U.S.
Senator. At the* time of this
memorable contest Mr. Mitchell
alleged that Ben Holladay was
ambitious to duo the Senatorial
mantle and wus exerting all his
influence against him, but it was
not so believed by the people, on
the contrary the popular under-
atanding was, that Mr. Holladay
was assisting Mr. Mitrlrell finan
cially and otherwise, and that his
friendship for hitn was unbounded.
But the truth lias at last been res
urrected, which proves that Cole
and Scott were to negotiate Mr.
Mitchell’s wiihdiawul from the
canvass for the sum of $25,000,
with the additional proviso that
on receipt of the money be should
assume the Holladay collar.
These delicate attentions, to the
honor of Mr. Mitchell, were de
clined by him. And it is possible
that this bit of intrigue would
have remained in the oblivion to
which it was consigutd, were it
