THE FRIDAY ASHLAND TIDINGS APRIL 23. IMO. INDEPENDENCE. The lhe thought of independence ot in m - - • - ■“ — * thinking and independence in voc- ing in Jackson county is worse than the nightmare to our neigh bor of the Democratic Time*. He speaks of independence as though it were a disgrace, as though it were a term calculated to bring odium upon those to whom it may be applied. It is remarkable what a dinerence our staLdpoint makes in the way we view matters. Now, to the editor of the Times and other political aspirant* who hope to obtain offices through their hold upon the strings that work the party “jumping-jack” tbe idea of independence on the part of voters is alarming, it is dctesU? blc, they can’t endure it—it inter feres with their little plan*. To the majority of citizens, however/ who pay th* taxes, and are inter ested in having nominated arid elected to office the men who are best qualified for the duties of of fice, ¿he thought of independence tn voting bring* no such terrors. They *eo that when each voter ex ercise* his own judgment, thinks and acts for himself, the officers in whose hands is entrusted the pub lic business are in reality chosen by the people, instead of by a ring composed of a dozen men, as is frequently the case where the staight-jacket politicians succeed in making the voters think it criminal to scratch a ticket. When you find a man particularly, tenderly solicitous that your party ticket shall go unscratched, uncrit icized, unexamined into the ballot box, just pause and consider his case for an instant—you will us ually discover that his personal aspirations give at least a slight color to his convictions upon the subject. - LANK VS. "HONEST' JOBN. CASCADE At the Democratic State Con vention Gen. Lane refused to vote for the unanimous nomination of John Whiteaker for Congress, and has been criticized severely by some Democrats. The editor of the Roseburg Independent has in terviewed the General, and gives his reader* the result. We make the following extract from hi* ar ticle: “The General freely gave us his reason for the action on his part. Prominent Democrats and men of responsibility had informed him that it was within their power to pibve that John Whiteaker, while a member of the Oregon Legisla ture, had accepted a bribe amount ing in the end to $3,000. One of the parties making this charge was ’[J0 a ; personage than an ex Senator, who stated he had tbe proof ready. “The circumstances of John Whiteaker being bribed are stated about as follows: As before said, Whiteaker was a member of the Oregon Legislature. He was one of the warmest of the advocates of the Oregon City lock and dam swindle. Through his efforts, as much as through those of any one else, the act authorizing the swin dle, became a law. After the leg islature had adjourned, among others who were paid for their ser vices in the matter, was'John Whiteaker, who received teu shares of the stock of the company. Three shares, it is charged, were voted by proxy by Whiteaker for sometime, and he finally sold them for the handsome sum of $3,000. “Gen. Lane says he has never voted for a Democi at under a cloud of suspicion, especially when that cloud was raised by that Democrat’s own party friends. The charge came from gentlemen and Democrats of prominence.” STOCK FARM THE ASHLAND DRUG STORE $ $ E. J. FARLOW, J. D.
