THE ASHLAND TIDINGS V r-9 S ( i C I E f 1 ! I Bargains ! Bargains c? I. 0. G. T. FRIDAY. i At the recent s. s>imi of th;- State Teachers’ Institute th«* com mittee on scliot i lav.' aiii« fniiiH-iits brought up the (pies:¡0’1 of normal trailing in the state in a ivport which recommended that the state make appropriations for the ap pointment ot two normal profes sors “>s institute conductors, w host* duty it should be to spent! at least two weeks in institute work in each county of the sfitte every year, the schools to be vtic.ifed «luring the two w«*eks in which I- the insiitute is hehl in their county. The committee’s report as first presented also recommcmled that a normal school be established at the State U mversitv, to b«* open from October to April and conducted by the same two normal profes sors, who wo dd do all tln-ir insti tute work between April ami Oc tober. 'This latter rt‘«‘ommenda- tion was finally left out of the re port. The question of tin* special training of teachers lor the .................... work ot education is tin* most important that is present«*«! in th«* whole range of public school ccoimrny. and should recciv«* mor«* attention than is given to it in this sta'p. If upon tin* Hitelligence, saga ilv am! wisdom of the masses ot tin* peo ple rests th«* whole fabric «»ur free mstitiitions ami tin* glorious destiny of human progros which they offer, then tin* pioprr train ing of the growing geiH'iations is one of the most vital interests of the state. T he human miml. ii. all its possibilities, both for good ami evil, is beyond comnaiisou with any otlivr force in ihe world W’lr'ch may he rontndled «»r direct ed by m;m<and'vet in our public schools, wh«*re the «•haiaet«*r of our nation is moulded to a gn at extent, wlier«* human mt< II develop«*«!, w«* sc«* teach» r (pialifications fur tlie wo: k should be <1 one by 1 hem even i«*ach up to the point wT its immense responsihiht ;«*s are re- alized. Mere k4t>wl«*«lgc ot til«* facts eontuui««i in the sr!i<!o! I «» \ r books is a very small part < 1 I in* qualifications ot a comp«*t«*ut tt-. ch- er, ami yet it alone is in most cases the test ot competency made by lh«>sc who employ th»* te.irlier- tor the public sdmols oft hegon. Men cannot build Imus; 4, cimnot wm k successfully at any trad»*, business or profession of life without a pre I paratory training which in most cases require.« years of patient ap plication and stu y. Not only to make, but even to «»Derate, com- pfex maehiiiery «;f any kmd re quires a man who has lad the training of a macliinisr, yer tin* complex machim ry <4' mi id am; the ulastic charact«*r of the chil- a dren of the laml are in too many cases submitted to the care ot teachers who ar«* entirely ignorant of the approaches t » the human mind, who know nothing ot the scienc«* ami tin* art ol Irirmouious and proper development of human character. Normal schools wonhl do D'Ucb to remeily this evil, ami the dutv of the stat«* to establish such sclnmls can scarcely be calle»l iu question. \Vc have now a University at which « i rtam l«jrtiH| mite ones ol th«* youth <»• ihe stat«* arc educate«! at tin* public expense. Their education may be used ex clusively for personal ends, in pri vate business pursuits w hich have no bearing whatever upon tin* public weal. Would it not be much more consist«*nt with our democratic ideas for the stat«*t«» aid in the special anti techieal train ing of youth for the work of form ing our national charact«*r? l-’lm botch-work of a poor mechanic is apparent to all observers as soon as the job is fiuish«*d. It takes longer, perhaps, to discover the botch-work of education, Imt the loose joints, the unstable tbumla- tton, the covered defects, will all appear in time.
