OW’TIl OF PORT
D
|
,
[lulnul Empire.]
here is no city in America, of its
. that can show the same number
of elegant business buildings as Port
land. Smaller tLan either San Jose or
Sacramento, 61.e has more fine edifices
for mercantile and manufacturing pur-
» ses than bo'h of them together. On
a recent visit to that city we noticed a
great improvement going on along
Front streot, wlrcli is fust becoming,
in elegHtl ’e and sub tunt al character of
its bu I.lings, a fornrdab'e rival for
M«rk>t street in S.in Fianci-co.
In 1870 tbe first li.-e io- real estate
came, and nib"i qient improvement of
bosiure-» property, took pl ico in that
city. That was purely specniative.and
had ils origin in Ben Holiday ’a railroad
ventures. Tbis was followed by a sad
reaction, in which some very worthy
men went to the wall.
The present
rise in valaea dot s not seem to be
based opou speculation, for no one man
has thrown into circulation any great
amount of money. On the contrary, it
ie a legitimate consequence of the
gradual growth and increasing wants
of the vast expanse of territory of which
Portland is the commercial and fiuan-
uial emporium.
Many ascribe this progressive move
ment to tbe great development of agri
culture iu the broad domain lying east
of tbe Cascades, but this ii hardly
warrantable to believe.
During the :
past season of grain shipments, fully
one half fcf the Walla Walla gram was
shipped directly from tbe Cascades to
Astoria, where it was loaded for tbe
United Kingdom; and Portland had no
hand in its shipment, nor received
profit from it in any w»y whatever,
Yet in spite of all this loss of a trade
Jong acceorded to her, Portland grew
and throve in 1878 as 3he had never
done befor?.

The pretty bit of fencing foils, Le
tween Edmunds and Bl line recent?;,
was u positive benefacition to the gal
lery. Tbe cloud of witness s who I
hover over tho senate in its progress
across vast Saharas of dull rouiiue are I
very gratelnl for any little oasis of thi,
sort. It is something to behold E I-

Bee Blaine rise like a Miine moon and
shine down over his left shoulder. It
was a very pretty little game of thrust
and parry, with a wonderful d’H-Tonee
in choice of weapons. Blaine pound».
Edmunds cuts. Blaine yields a battle
axo, Edmunds cirries the identical
Damascus blade that Wendell Puillips
gives in his “Lost Aits,” which was
flexible enough for a o rrkscrew sheath.
Blaine's sarcasm is a robust affur — a

reminds one of chain lightning.

Cultivating Wheat.
[Ohio Farmer.]
We have just boi n reading an ac
count of experiments made in England
in dibbling wheat and cultivating it
like corn with a hoe Tbe set d was
plante i in drills, one foot apart, and
four inches apart in the rows.
The
spaces bet ween tbe drill rows were care
fully cultivated until the plants had at
tain-'d suffi •¡•■nt i rowth to interfere
wi h the work. The result tv is eighty
four bush Is per acre. Another t xper-
irneiit. with row* six inches apart and
the s< e<l four inches upart in the rows,
resulted in a yield of sixty ni; e bushels
per acre. O;her ca-es might be given
in which even greater success attended
this mode of cultivating wheat. We
would suggest thft our readers test this
ni thod ou a small patch of ground —
a square rod, or more. Have it accur
ately measured, put it iuto the. best
condition, and see what your land Is
capable of producing. If it will pay,
we ought to know it, and we will never
find out without trying. You may be
compelled to cultivate the square rod
with the hand hoe; but if it is found to
iucrease the crop to an extent that will
justify the work, implements for culti
vating by hor.-e power will be speedily
forthcoming.
