» + THE ASHLAND FBI DAY............................................... .'...MAY 24. 117b A GREAT INDUSTRY. The <cowth of tbe beef trade with England during the last few years, has been little less than marvelous It is stated that in 1876, the importations of preserved meats to England, only amounted to 28,000,000 pounds, while during he last year, the shipments ag gregated 102,000,000 lbs. This trade, a comparatively new one,has steadily in creased ever since it .originated and tbe outlook would indicate that the present year’s shipments will vastly exceed those of 1877. The grand facilities for raising the sweetest and best beef in tbe world on tbe broad prairies of the West, and the cheapness of transports tion, enable onr people to successfully compete with British cattle raisers on their own soil,* and American beef av erages 14 cents per pound in the Eug lish market. Letter From Chief Dunbar. ASHLAND THE The Wife Murderer. TIDINGS. O J Thursday last, J. L. Dinwiddie, Sher iff of Sonoma county, California, arrived in Ashland and on the following morning started for Lake View to take charge of the man cow under arrest at that place, accus ed of murdering his wile at Forestville, So noma Co , four years ago next Octo ver. The sheriff was accompanied from this place by Harry Oviatt and Mr. H >11, the genllerften who arrested the accused at Clear Lake. From tbe information furnished Mr. Dinwid die,he has little do-tbt about the man under ar est being the murderer. If so.his convic Havirg percbased the entire interests of my hte tion and punishmeat will be extremely grat - partners, in the Ahl nd M 11«, I UXe pleas it s ing to tbe people of Sonoma Co., among ure iu anntHmciug u> the pubdc that, the whom this most atrocious murder was com mitted. We learn that Mrs. Lee was a very estimable lady while her husband was a drunken vagabond. Alter several children had been born to them, bis conduct became ABE NOW RUNNING AND MAKING THE unbearable, aud she was compelled to leave him. His wif? was still much afraid of him, and blankets would not permit him to occupy the same room with be: until he took his knife and pis FLANNELS, tol away and left them in another part of the bouse. The boys, fearing he might under CASIMERES, take to murder their mother, took the arms from where he bad left them, kept them in DOESKINS their room till morning and then returned them to the place where they had found AND 1IOSERY. them. It was not yet too late for tbe fiend to accomplish bis awful design. Steiling from his wife’s side whi e she was asleep, he got the pistol and shot her brains out. T idings :—Although the “burg" that William used to have h«-re on this oreek is “gone up”—I mean “gone down," or I might s^y “gone out”—I find much improve ment around about this part of Jose phine county, since my visit here one year ago to-day. Considerable gold is beiug taken from the mining claims, but the attention of the people is giv en principally to agriculture and tUe improvement of their beautiful lands. Tbe pure water and tbe health laden breezes of this lovely little mountain valley make this indeed a very desir able place to “live life away." The people of this locality are shame lolly treated by the Post Office De partment. A large settlement of in telligent citizens are compelled to go from ten to sixteen miles for their pa pers and letters, wnen it is the duty of tbe powers that be to grant their petition for a mail service up Will iams creek, to the centre of this settle ment. The lodge of I. O. G. T., here, is doing a good work, and such men as Brothers Bparlm, Jones, Robinson .Stockbarger and a host of others are de termined to make it a success. We had a splendid public meeting last evening after which we called a meeting of tbe lodge, and were rejoiced by the acqui sition of six new members, among whom I will mention Hon. W. W. Fid dler and Rev. Miller, whose names and influence will add much to the power of this lodge in this conflict with in temperance. Here I am tbe guest of Bro, H. H. S pari in, who has just got home from his work on the Layton ditch (ibe ditch being now completed.) He brought with him the “hip" of a deer which he says he killed on purpose for me, and I am glad be did, for *twas just splendid, and I hope if ever I come this way again he Mill have “just kill ed" another one. I know I feel sorry for the poor deer, but then they are good to eat, and we sometimes sacrifice tbe life of many innocent things to please our appetites. Why not dotbat too, for you know “if I don’t, some body else will." AU of Williams creek will vote solid for Wildervilie for the oounty seat. It is by Jar the most popular candidate in the county, notwithstanding there are lour tickeis in the field. Yours in haste, D unbar . ASHLAND WOOLEN. MILLS , MAIN STREET, ASHLAND W. H. The mining season is mostly over with, for those who. work on a small scale., Mr. A. Watts made a very satis factory oleau-up. Mr. Layton has plenty of water yet. He has struck the pay streak on Brushy Gulch and is piping away under the stimulus of very •ucouraging prospects. Hid lower hy draulic is also folly under way. Political matters at present com mand a large share cf public attention. Never before, in tbe history of .the county, waa there such a rush for pet ty positions. Three tickets are already in tbe field, and another in a forward state of incubation, and yet I am afraid there will be aspirants unprovided for. Passing from the ridiculous to tbe sublime, I think we can honestly boast of the obampion boy preacher of tbe State. Tbe Rev. Miller, of the M. E Church South, although recently in tbe State and but a short time On the cir cuit. has already effected a rticcessful revival on Lower Applegate, in which 18 new converts were added to tbe Cnuroh, and is now conducting a suc cessful series of meetings at this place. Though but twenty-one years of age, his sermons would do credit to a man of twenty years’ experience in tbe pul pit.
