While the terms of Russia so far as
they have transpired, are severe upon
the Turks, there is no truth in repest-
ed charges that the Russians are acting
in bad faith since cessation of hostili
ties was agreed on. The danger in the
situation lies not in what Rassia may
do before the conference,
but in wbat may happen in the confer
ence. It has transpired that at the
cabinet meeting yesterday a telegram
waa sent to the English fleet at Besika
Bay ordering it to enter the Dardanelles,
bat the order was countermanded upon
receipt of Gortsoliakoff*s dispatch.
Mnoh fear now exists that the Turks,
in their indignation against England,
have agreed npon terms of peace
which will seriously compromise En
glish interests, and as at the approach
ing conference, it will be every power
for itself, it is feared England may
find herself involved without allies,
and compelled, if she is forced to fight,
to fight both Russia and Turkey.

Vienna, Feb 4.—The situ »tion is still re

Russia is concentrating tioops in the inter

ly for defeuse against Austria.

O q the 7th inat., died at Rome, the
great head of the Catholic Church.
Pious IX, whose name before he re
ceived holy ordination, was Giovanni
Marie Mastai Ferretti, was almost
eighty-eight years of age at the time of
bis death. For a half oentury be has
l>een one of the great lights of the
Church and his loss will be deeply
mourned by Cxtholios throughout
christendom. It is said that he was in
tended for the army, but resolved, at
an early age, to devote himself to the
rhurch. He received holy orders in
1818; waa created archbishop of Spole-
t> in 1827; cardinal archbishop of
Imola in 1840 and on June 16tb, 1846,
w.ie elected to the papacy, the holy
office having become vaeant by the
death of Gregory XVI, which occurred
oh J one 1st of that year. He was boo
orod by his people for bis self-denial,
benevolence, his unswerving devotion
to the peonliar principles of his creed,
and for the ability with which be con
ducted the affairs of his church, through
the long oontinued political and eccle
siastical difficulties which surrounded
him during his occupancy of the papal
ehair. It will doubtless be difficult to •

The discovery of this alkali in the watei s
of the mineral springs at Link vide, is one of
no little consequence. Lithia is co isidered
of great value to the M ats ria M koica on ac*
eount of its great neutralizing power and it is
said to be admirably adapted to caaes in
which it is desirable to eliminate uric acid
from the system, and especially to cases of
gout
and
rheumatism,
being
far
ino e powerful than either the correspond
ing salts of so la or potass i. We ascertain
that this extremely valuable salt was firtt
discovered by Ariwe<U>n in 1817, in cer
tain minerals from the iroi mines of Utoo.
It h*s since been fomd in other minerals
and numerous mineral waters, as those of
Carlsbad, Pyrmont, Keiae igen, Kreuznach,
Aix la-chapelle, Vichy etc. in Europe.
It
hasUtfso been fjund, by spectrum analysis,
in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the
river Thames; in the ashes of plants grown
on granite soil, »nd even in milk and human
blood. As far aa we oau ascertain, how
ever, it had been foand, as au importa-it el
ement, in th# waters of but one spring in
the Unite 1 Slates, that oi Gettysburg, until
Dr. Chase's analysis of the walers of the Hot
Springs at Linkville revealed its presence

C ritical . -The latest eastern dispatches
state that the sending of a British fleet
to Constantinople and the parliamentary
vote of credit have produced a pro
found sensation in Russia. The Bus
tian government mig^t easily oonstrue
these sots as breaohss of neutrality, af
fording a sufficient pretext for war.
The situation is extremely critical and
it will doubtless require great tack on
the part of th» British cabinet to
prevent the moti serious oonsequanoes.
