Timex says that it Ì8 estimated that the yield of gold dupt from the various camps in that county, during the year 1877, amounted to $250,000; beef cattle sold, $125,000; wool, $40,000; proceeds from sale of farm produce, grain and flour, bay and vegetables, $75,000. It is stated that, in all probability, the next Oregon legislature will be called upon to organize a new county out of the eastern portion of Union Co including the Wallowa valley. A boy named Jonathan Wells, near Forest Grove, recently shot himself in the arm. It is feared that the mem ber will have to be amputated. The o?*y council of Salem has passed an ordinance for the suppression of opium smoking. L. F. Holman, the man who attempt ed to murder bia wife at Wallula, last October, and who subsequently made bis escape from the officers at Walla Walla, was arrested in SacameDto last Friday. — Guard. Mrs. Leonard is in jail at The Dalles oharged with an attempt to n^urder her husband, Mr. D. G. Leonard, who is naw lying in a very critical oondi lion. T he S mallpox .—A dispatch fiom St. Joseph, Yamhill Co., dated the 13 iust., to the Oregonian, says: “The smallpox scare has assumed a more se rious nature. Ail the oases iu this city are about well, but at Mr. Elli son’s, three miles south of here, there have been three deaths within a month —one having died last night.” The examination of W. Wallace for the killing of Samuel Dodge, in War ner valley, was concluded last Sator day at noon. The defendant was held for manslaughter, and his bonds fixed at SI.000 for appearance at the June term of Circuit Court.
