A FARMER’S OPINION. All Join Hands and Circle to Wagner Creek. C oming D own —Tureo new Howe sewing machines, were put up at auc tion, on the streets, in this place, last Saturday, and brought §35, each. COMMITTEES APPOINTED, G rants P ass , June 12, 1877. E ditor T idings :—Permit me through your musts excellent paper to give a few thoughts, iu regard to what the people of Southern Oregon need and i must have, so that they can compete1 with other portions of the Pacific coast. The first and greatest need is a railroad through Rogue river valley, to connect with the Oregon arid California roads; Do we want a road ? Most undoubtedly I the response would be yes! But how can we have it ? My understanding is that California is ready to put their road through from Reading to the State line; between Oregon and California, just as soon as Oregon is ready and willing to meet them. Now what can be dune to accomplish the desired end? I propose that the people of Jackson county, in conjunction with the north eastern portion of Josephine and the southern portion of .Douglas counties, offer a certain amount of money, or its equivalent in the products of our coun try, say seventy-five or one hundred thousand dollars as a bonus, to the present owners uf the O &. C. R R , or to any company that will undertake to build the road. Let us make a move in that direction and see whai can be done. I am of the opinion tbai each producer ami consumer could well af ford to give two or three per cent, an nually on B10 valuation of his property, for two or three years, for the comple tion of said road through our valley, ¿»nd by so doing seventy or seventy-five thousand dollars could be raised, and it is certain that we would realize back again the full amount giveu, in less than two years after the completion of the road; in the reduced rates on freight, on our imports and exports alone, besides the increase in the value of real property and many other advan tages derived from the road and its building. These are a few of my thoughts, on this subject; my object iu penning them is to bring this important subject be fore the people of Southern Oregon and to arouse from their lethargy, in hopes they will meet together and thor oughly discuss the subject of a railroad through our county.
