His appeal is to the sons of the old America that found itself again In the great war and is beginning to reassert its alms, ideals and purposes that have come down from days when the national cornerstone was laid. His task, as President Harding sees It is to sail a straight course by the ol'd charts. He will listen to major ities rather than to strident! class minded faction, racial groups and half hysterical minorities. He will go on, holding to the road of the Constitu tion, guided by the will of the major ity and keeping to the alms of nation alism. In this he has read the heart of America, and its unchanging will, now as in Lincoln's hour. iPhila. Pub lic Leger. The astonishing thing is that there are leaders connected with the Y. M. C. A., and the Y. W. C. Our boys and girls can not be entrusted to the leadership or to the educational and club features of institutions drawing their sustenance from the churches of the living Christ to have the faith of these children undermined by such infamous attccks upon God's Infallible Word. The Shorter Bible, so called1, Is one of the most blasphemous attacks that has been mcde upon God's Ho'.y Bible. Let the Y. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. Maybe they're both right. It's funny how thbgs ex actly opposite are often exactly the same. It s as cold at M9 Btuin pom as it Is at the north polo, If you can believe what the explorers say, and see advertising in the light of news. and it is news. The merchant wilio advertises tells his story frankly t. the public, knowing he will be checked up and courting investigation of his statements and prices. The adver tisement of today Is not the subject of suspicion. It is the merchant who is afraid to tell his story over his sig nature that the public regards with doubt, and properly go. The boom in retail trade awaits only a little thought on the part of the mer chant, plus the fundamental know ledge that advertising is an Investment and not an expense and a duty owed to the public whose support is sought. The whole business structure of the nation depends on advertising. In creased business means greater pro duction,' lower first cost, a larger turnove.-, increased buying and con sequen'ly provides a saving to the buying public. The public should support merchants who advertise be cause they are the constructive force that helps to keep costs down. GIVE US A PLAIN CONTRACT LAW Oregon has an unsound and almost insane set-of laws for letting contracts for public work and buying equipment and supplies. First, in only one county iMultno maih must all $500 or over contracts be let to lowest bidder. Why not the same low for the whole state? What Is good for one county is good for all. He feels that It was the key to the heart and the purpose of Lincoln. He points out again what it la so easy for the Amer icans of half a century later to forget, that it was Die passion of the ra!. splitter from; the Sangamon. Emanci pation v.as no more than a great means to a greater end, that of the preservation of the Union. Lincoln took emancipation in his stride to ward that goal. If the speaker thinks there Is a chance of reopening the Treasury's doors his remarks take a patronizing and conciliatory tone, almost concealing the sneer that lies so near the surface. If he has given up hope of further financial prodigal ity on the part of Uncle Sam. he makes no further concealment of his feelings, and gives out his real opinion of America. 'Washington Post. Retr.il trade has not yet caught up. Close analysis of this situation discloses that t retailers have lagged becausa they have failed to put Into the minds of the people a feeling of confidence that, prices have reached the bottom and t!ut better times ere at han-l. It Is amazing how few retail merchants in the smaller towns realize the value of educational advertising. They are so close to the picture they fail to sao its perspective. They look for the Im mediate dollar and In grasping at the shadow they miss the substance. The value of advertising Is cumulative. Indeed, that is its greatest worth.
