LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER, TOLEDO, OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 1922. ii t . 1 i i PAGE THREE RETRIBUTION TRAILING GRAFTERS 'President Harding asks Congress ror a special appropriation of 1500,000 for the Investigation and prosecution ot war time frauds by the Department of Justice. The House- resolution prob ably will call for a special investiga tion of all contracts and expenditures of the War and Navy Department and of the Alien Proporty Custodian, also for scrutiny of all settlements of claims arising out of war contracts. This looks like bad medicine for wai profiteers as they have been barred from taking cover behind the statute of limitations. But If it only gets the makers of rotten raincoats and stamps them with Infamy forever, it will be worth the money. Capper's Weekly. DAWES IS MOVING (Let no one get the idea that General Dawes is failing merely because his figures are disputed by the Democrats. Such figures always are disputed. His greater task is proceeding. He has succeeded In impressing the size of it and the need of it on the public con sciousness and that means progress. Baltimore America. A CAPITALIST OUTRAGE Lenine's inclination to hit the United States, as he goes out of his way to do in his reply to the Genoa demand, Is quite understanable. He says we initiated the policy responsi ble for all the woes which lately have fallen upon the Russian people. To get out from under, when one has made a mess of it, is quite human, and in this case Lenlne could nut help pick ing the United States as the chief of fender. The United States is the leading example of nations afflict, with a foolish devotion to capitalism and individualism. To this offense 't adds the even greater guilt of prosper ity. Lenlne cannot forgive the Ameri can people who insist on making capi talism a success, who insist upon mak ing It work in the teeth of all Lenlne' theories so that its people are fed and clothed, are solvent and as happy as humans manage to be in this imper pect world. While Bolshevism and Lenlne are presiding over a starving and bankrupt nation, it is unforgivable for capitalist nations to thrive in de fiance of the true doctrine. iChivago Tribune. (Uncle Ted('t Bed-Time Stories) Continued from page 4) Memorial Commission. I want to read you ono thing he said and then tell yoa of President Harding's talk. Mr. Tafl said: "Here on the banks of the Po tomac, the boundary between the two sections, whose conflict made the bur den, passion and triump of his life, it is pecularly appropriate that H should stand.' He continued that it marks, 'the restoration of the brotherly love of the two sections in this memorial of one who is as dear to the hearts of the South as to those of the North.' "I cannot, of course, tell you all that was said by President Harding In accepting this memorial for the Na tion. I want, rather to show you how. when he spoke, our present President tried to paint out that neither Lincoln nor Washington were supermen, nor any! other President past or present. He showed a;ain what he has already in the short time he has been at the head of our government, demonstrated time and again, '.hat so-called super men have no place in the make-up of our country. He speaks and acts on the one theory that: " 'It is vastly greater than finding the superman if we justify the confi dence tli j t our instiiUvious are capable of bringing into authority, ln time ol stresr,, men big enough and strong enough to meet r.ll demands.' 'I hope I can convey to you, kiddies, some of the feeling I had when listen ing to President Harding's address. I came away firmer than ever- in the belief that our government is the greatest of all and that as such It will go ahead so long as our loaders re member two tillage: that supermen do not exist; second: that we can best servo the rest of the world by keeping our government as the fathers would have kept It, free from entangling al liances. As Mr. Harding said toward the close of his address: " "Washington and Lincoln offered outstanding proof that a representative popular government, constitutional' founded, can find its own way to sal vation and accomplishment.'
