VESSEL SINKS
IN COLUMBIA
FOLLOWING CRASH
ASTORIA, Or., May 29. Seven
bodies were removed from the Funk
en freighter Welsh Prince Tuesday
and investigations were Btarted to
establish thq responsibility for the
crash between the freighter Iowan,
Inbound, and the freighter WleUh
Prince, outbound, just before mid
night In the narrow channel of the
Columbia river off Altoona, Wash
Pilots Sullivan of the Welsh Prince,
and Pearson of the Iowan, agreed that
a misunderstanding of the signals
caused the crash.
The Iowan plowed a 30-foot rent In
the Welsh Prince's sloe, and the boil
ers exploded when the water rushed
into the flreroom. Men scurried for
the upper decks as the steamer set
tled, and the Iowan and tug Oneonta
stood by to assist. When it was found
that the steamer would not settle far
ther, and that the crew, except the
seven dead, was safe on board, the
Oneonta took three Injured to a hos
pital here and the Iowan proceeded
on to Portland.
The Dead
J. Blake, donkeyman, Portland.
Able seamen: Joel Buckwa!ter, Port
land; W. Stokey, Shields, England;
Knute Yenatad, Portland; C. M. Jen
sen, Denmark; J. C Clare, England!
H. Ward, England. '
Although early reports indicated
that heavy smoke banks from forest
fires were responsible for the disas
ter, it was later agreed that a mis
understanding of signals was entirely
responsible.

JERSEY BREEDERS TELL
WHY OREGON IS AT TOP
Experiment Station Director Joins In
Jubilee; College Makes Tests ana
Vouches for Records.
Good climate and skillful manage.
meat are two leading causes of Ore
gon Jersey breeders' achievement in
developing seven of the eight highest
producing Jersey cows in the Unltea
States. So said speakers at the Jer
sey jubilee, just completed by a three-
day tour of the Willamette valley.
"Your phenominal achievement ts
of value to the dairy world,'' said
James T. JardlneV director of the col
lege experiment station in addressing
the breeders. "It could have been ac
complished only by men of vision who
were unwilling to stop near the goal
of a new record, but in the language
of the football man, 'forced the ball
over for a touchdown.' "
The responsibility for maintaining
the great reputation rests vith tho
men primarily benefitted by the breed
ing work, the director explained, but
the college also has a share ithut of
making the tests and vouching for
the records. This testing. In charge
of the dairy department, has recently
been commended as among hte best
in the country.
Responsibility for speeding up in
crease of pure-breds, now only 4.6 per
cent of dairy cattle, and for promotion
of herd Improvement by community
testing and breeding, was also shared
for the college by the director.
Protection from devastating diseases
of dairy cattle by community and fed
eral and state cooperation, rests In
part with the college. "Disease is
costly," said the director, "and the
station is making valuable contribu
tions toward control, best effected by
prevention."
Training new men and women to
gain vision and information to make
themselves helpful In further develop
ment was accepted1 as a college re
sponsibility.
