SILETZ
The holidays have packed and with
them many pleasant memories. It had
been e good many years since we had
a white Christmas. It waB a treat to
coast on the hill sides and to ride ever
the frozen ground behind a team of
spirited horses going eiglu or ten miles
an hour. This was done at Slletz.
Every one seemed to enjoy themselves
as much in a sleigh as they would tak
ing a joy ride in an nuto and there is
not near so much danger of an acci
dent Siletz may be congratulated upon the
splendid order and gojd che r that pre
vailed during the weeks festivities.
The teachers have returned to their
work after having spsnt the holidays
at home with their lamilk s and fr.ends.
Prof. Deeg went as far aa Souttle to
spend Christmas with his lamily. Prof.
Deegs tan; fly ara leaders, his wife
and two daughters are teaching in the
State of Washington.
Slletz public School was never so
well conducted as now. Order and dis
cipline prevails In each department, on j
the play grounds 'as well as In tho gym-1
na3luin. The gym is a great blessing :
as It keeps the children in the dry '
and thUB prevents the children from I
getting colds and other acute diseases.
When the children are dry and com-'
fortablo they can learn their lessons
much better and It saves their shoes
and clothing.
Rev. C. W. Pogue will hold revival
metlngs in '.he M. E. Church, commen
cing Sunday the Sth, and will continue
for a week or more. Mr. Pogue is a
good preacher and has much of the
evangelistic spirit. In days gone by
the Methodist Church at Siletz had
more than a hundred members and It j
Is hoped the church work will revive !
at this place again. iRev. John Adams
the local minister will assist in '.he
meetings. Mr. Adams is well knowa j
and has a high standing for his consis- j
tent christian character, not only
among his own people but among the
whites as well. t j
The road leading to the Lower Farm j
oh the north side of the river is now
open for travel. Wagons pass over It :
nearly every day. We long for the
bridges and would like to se them put
back but we will have to wait as the
county is handicaped for the lack ot
funds. I understand the county court
has two ways to raise this money, one '
Is to issue county warrants, payable
In one year and the other Is to bond
the county for the amount needed
about, $S0,000. The bonds to run five

be they could not be paid at all, be
cause many peisons will not be able
to pay their taxes and much of it will
go on the delinquent list. Men who
work for wages must be paid or they
won't work.
Taxes keep mounting up and the
tax payers are clamoring for more
economy in the expendatures of the
peoples money,

PACIFIC SPRUCE CO,
REMODELING BIG MILL
President C. E. Johnson and son.
and F. W. Stevens,
general manager.
of the Pacific Spruce Co., a.Tived
down from Portland Wednesday even
ing to start active operations in the
remodeling of the big government mill.
They were accompanied by architect
Swan and a number ot mill Wrights.
They were out bright and early yes-
terday morning at tho mill and a plan
of campaign mapped out. The mill
was built by the government for the
j exclusive manufacture of airplane
spruce, and before It can be used for
' commercial purposes It Is necessary
j that many changes be made. The
front of the mill will be lengthened
for tho handling of longer logs, a part
of tho building put up by the govern
mr: t for a cut-up plant will be torn
dow'h. Tho big sorting shed will also
he torn down and a number of other
changes made.
The mill was but soventy per cent
complete when the war ended, al
though the necessary material for
completing same was all assembled
and on tho ground. The completion ot
the mill and tho changes necessary
will probably take five or six months
time. Tho new company however ex
pects to rush everything as fast aa
practical and the mill will be in full
operation not later than the flrdt of
June or July.
A number cf local men were put to
; work this morning and will be employ
led Dtoivdily. The office building Is be
ing re-roofed and put In shape for oc
cupancy. Much work Is also nocessasry on
the railroad to Waldport before trains
can be operated over same. This
work and the logging will mean much
to tho metropolis of South Lincoln
i County, and a thriving little city will
spring up at the mouth of tho Alsea
Bay.
The steamer Powers will be over-
hauled and put In shape to handle the
J towing of logs from Sou.'h Beach to
, Toledo. Wo aro Informed that the
.company will also do some logging in
the Weasel tract, north of Toledo.
WAR TAX REMOVED
