THE HOUSING BLOCKADE In demanding war wages the build ing trades are the worst obstacle to the housing cam pal jn and the worst enemies of the poorer class of workers who must have small cheap homes. A. report from one city shows that thirty new houses have been built in one addition that cost $7000 each. But no laboring man can possibly buy or rent a $7000 house, which is not much larger than could have been built in pre-war times for $3000. The housing embargo is still further aggravated by the fact that almost every lamily wants a house on wheels , besides one to live in, the motorcar that for upkeep costs more than a I house. ! It can only help business by relieving it of burdens of taxation and regula tion. Given the home markets and markets abroad to sell surplus pro ducts, business 'and production will and must take care of itself. Americans are tired of being social ized, paternalized and politicalized to death. PROSPERITY RESTS WITH LABOR The west coast and northwest lum ber industry shows a slightly Im proved tone according to reports of lumber organizations. Building activity seems to ba increasing in all sections as spring opens, but it is handicapped by the arbitrary action of the building trades In most instances refusing to recognize changed conditions whlcn warrant lower wages. If other building materials anu wages dropped in proportion to lum ber, increased building operations would open logging camps and mills and solve the question, of unemploy ment in many sections. Will organized labor see the neces sity of co-operaling with industry by consenting to reductions in wages in proportion to the present reductions in living costs? Lumber, almost more than any other Industry is awaiting a return to normal wage and transportation con ditions as the wage earner receives the bulk of every dollar spent for lum ber in logging camp, sawmill, trans portation charges and building.
