FEBRUARY 18th, 1921 NUMBER 52 A oiimo SILETZ Monday night the grocery store at Orton took fire and was burned to the ground, a total loss except the poBtofflce money and some of the papers, also the cash that belonged to the new owner, Mr. W. S. Hall. Mr. Hall was alone In the building. He slept upstairs and in moving around with an oil lamp the lamp slipped out of his hand breaking it and setting the oil afire. The upper part of the building was soon all ablaze. Mr. Hal! tried to put It out bysmotherlng the fire with bed ' clothes, but' was un successful. He was hemmed in his room and would have perished had It not been for his presence of mina. He tied some bed clothes together and tried to swing down from the window, but the swing broke and he fell to the ground. His eyebrows and hair were singed and he had some burns, but otherwise he .scaped In Jury. Mr. Hnll had just bought the tore from Mrs. Crarles Gardner. It Is a serious loss and a calami'y to the hole community. Orton had gotten to be quite' a business place. Agood deal of freight was chipped fromtthere and the business is increasing right along. The house and goods were insured. It Is not known whether Mr. Hall will rebuild or not. Classes in botany, civics, shorthand, and geometry are now ad ded and are under way. Last Saturday evening there was held In the gymnasium two basket ball games. The first was a girl's game between two school teams, one representing the upper grades and the other made up largely of school girls. The game was refereed by Mr. Arthur Bensell, and It showed much enthus iasm on the part of the players and great was the applause from the side lines. The final score stood 12 to 9 in ravor or the grade girl's team. Fol lowing this was the game between the Sileta town team and the team rep-1 resenting Upper Farm, with Mr. Chas. Larsen officiating as referee. This showed good speed and some features of passing and basket shooting which aic ueaciYiuB ui very nign creuit.
