"RICHEST MAN ON EARTH"
Writes a letter now being printed
In all the large city papers in U. S,
Canada and Europe. The letter which
Meyers wrpte to a small Nebraska
newspaper and which hit the right
spot so accurately that it has gone
round the world and baclc again was
as follows:
"I wonder if you know that one of
the richest men in the world was 14
miles north of Norfolk, right here
in Pierce? That man is the writer.
I am just a common 'plug blacksmith,'
but oh! how rich.
"I go to my labors each morning,
work until noon, go to dinner, returu
at 1 P. M. and work until 6 o'clock.
I enjoy the greatest of all blessings,
good health. Rockefeller would give
all he possesses in money and hold
ings for my stomach, but he can't
have it.
"Each day sees something accom
plished and every job of work I turn
out I feel I have done my customer' a
service worthy of my hire.
"I have a wonderful little wife. She
has stuck to me 22 years, so Iknow
she must be a dandy to accomplish
that.
"I have a little home, a beautiful
litlle daughter, a son grown to matur
ity and now in life's game for himself.
"Rich? Why, man alive, who can
nossibly be richer?
"Then, to add to ell the above
riches. 1 take down my old shotgun in
season and ramble through fields,
woods and tangle in search of the elus
ive cottontail, teal and mallard with
mv faithful old pointer at "heel now
Dast 11 years old), ana ne is as nappy
n I when on the hunt. Then, when
I get back, oh! how good everything
does taste.
"Then, when night has spread its
mantle over this good old universe, I
settle down in a good old easy chair,
enjoy a smoke and then roll into bed
to bo embraced by Morpheus and nev
er hear a sound until the beautiful
break of another day.
"Kith, did you say? Well, I gues3.
Dollars, no; not many, You inquired
about riches, not mater'al wealth.
"The heighth of my ambition is so
to live that I may havo no regrets for
having lived, when tho time comes for
me to shuttle off this mortal con, anu
I hepe by that time !o have accumu
lated just enough dolh:rs, that myself
and mine may not be objects of char
ity. "This, then, is my ideal of a rich
man. If any one enjoys life more
than I do, he is to be envied for his
riches. With kindest. ri-.irds.
"Edward J. Meyers."
