and his wagon is a total wreck, and

be missed in our burg. We understand

held at the home of O. V. Hurt last
week and the Yachats Telephone Com

Ona. L. M. Commons Is building a
large barn on his farm on North Bea
ver. Zenas Copeland returned to Toledo
Tuesday, after an absence of eight
years, he has just recently disposed or
his interests in' a pine apple plantation
at Honolulu.
Jim J. Derby of Siletz made final
proof on his homestead before county
County Clerk Ira Wade Monday.
Jesse Reeder and Clayton Pond were
his witnesses.

Large quantities of chittem bark
are coming to town, these days. Chit
tem is legal tender at this season of
the year.
Yesterday Harry Fant closed his
contract as mail carrier on the Tole-do-Siletz
route, and Joe Turnldge, the
new sub contractor took the route to
day. Mr. Turnidge will continue to run
a hack on the route for the benefit of
all who wish to travel that way.
O. R. Altree and family came over
Urom Drift Creek yesterday and will
spend the Fouith here. Oliver in
forms us that his saw mill Is in runn
ing shape and will begin sawing within
a week or ten days.
R. E. Collins and wife returned last
Tuesday from Portland, where they
have been for several months. Mr.
Collins will take the management of
the Leader, the present editor retiring
to take charge of the office of County
Judge.
Beat Gaither Is building a new barn
on his farm near town, (preparing to
keep his stock in the dry this winter.
Miss Eva Akin left this morning for
Philomath where she will visit with
her sister, Elva, for a time. After the
summer vacation she will take up the
work of teacher in the McMInnvllle
public schools.
The war with Spain Is going to be
a more serious matter than many
thought it would be.

evening that his father, who lives at
Portland, was not expected to live.
Chas. Altree at once started for Port
land with his car, accompanied by Ed,
Oliver, Clarence and Clair. They left
here at nine p. m. arriving in Port
land at five the next morning. At the
latest report Mr. Altree is a little better.
