I'll go back to our first baltlo which was really no fighting at all; It took place two months and two weeks after we loft Cr.mp Lewis. It was at St Mehlel. We were In reserve a few miles b, lilad the front Hue where we had to take all tho Jerry's high ex plosives without being able to answer him back. We were there for a few days dug In, awaiting orders to re lieve tin front line. But we got dif ferent orders and another division took our place, and wo wero withdrawn and moved Into tho famous Argonne Forest Of course you have heard of the Ar gonne fight. That was us. Exactly throe months after we left Camp Lewis, we put over a five hour barrage and at four o'clock In the morning we went "over the top'' with our. own trtUlery barely clear ing our heads; and say those old shells sounded good even It they were bitting trees and taking chips off tho hill Chanty "Piloting on the Sllclz 'River", by our famous Arkansas Sky Iblown to atoms within reach of meipilot Peter Vandergrift. We went up against the pick and prldo of tho German Army, with thous ands of machine gun nests hid every where. We hadn't more U.an gone through our own wire cither, before they begai shelling our rocd end ma chine guns were sputtering out of the tog. Many a poor fellow loct his life ln the first five minutes. Well we drove, dug captured and fought them back for nine kilometers that Cay, and took thousand prisoners. That night we du3 In on Vlery Riuse. Of course you knew that my soctlon Is the observers for the Regiment, which means that with our big observers telescope, we must keep the German front line under constant observation and send back exact map co-ordinates, of enemy batterloa, machine gun nest, or strong points, also Uiolr front line. The first day we travelled so fatrt that we could not establish an observation poet (P. O ) so that night our little section of nine men and oaf Ueuter ant wcul oui on a rocoualauuce patrol to locate the enomy first lino. We were dug In on the rlrge on a plain and Jerry holding dense wood, with "No Man's Land" about a kilometer wide bcteween us for the night. Our section started out at eleven o'clock P. M. but couldn't travel fast for Jer ry was shooting up lights and b!g flow er pots all the time, and vWhea one of those thinrs go up. It changes night Into day for a minute or two. After several hours we got to where we could bear the Buches moving around la the underbrush, and so we decided (t was time to r.o bacK. About half way back our hair stood on end; when off to our left, we hoard suddenly, "help, help, Bodies, Boehci," then a hot and all was still. We drew our automatics and carried thorn ready for action. Then one of Jerry's big flow er pot went off and we flopped and took a look around but there was nothing in sight, we went on a few teps farther and all of a sudden, "rata tat tat tat,'' an automatic rlflo opened tip on us not thirty feet away. We dropped again and were lucky enough Dot to lose a man, but tbey wore sure knocking dirt in our eyes. We had an Idea that rt was one of our own out-guards, so we called out, "hold your fire, tills is an American Patrol," and believe me it was music when there came out of the dark a voire In Iho good old U.
