moral ' i VOLUME 26 TOLEDO, LINCOLN COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15th, 1918 NUMBER 39 SILETZ A full vote was polled, at Si lotz Tuesday. The day- was fine and this gave the ladies a chance to ccmj to the polls. This pre cinct as well as the county gav? large Republican majoriti's. By the grace of the R 'nublicaii and the Socialist party the Dem ocratic candidate for Sheriff was elected. Ho is a good looking young fellow, an expert ba!' player, a native son and belongs to an eld' pioneer family and will no doubt make a good ofiicer. Siletz did not bite. Wj did not holler our heads off when the news came tbat Germany had surrendered. We didn't be lieve it. We thought It was a camoullagh. Germany is des perate and will do everything possible to deceive and get the advantage. No one behoves what the German ruler 3 may say. When we are sure tfoj war i ended and the Kaiser is licked then we will celebrate. This great war was started by the German Warlords, but it is sure ly coming to a close. Instead of winning the war Germany has written in human history some of the darkest and most brutal crimes cvjr committed by any people. What marvel jus things hao been accomplished in the four yea-s of war. The greatest military power eve" or ganized cn earth is being pul verized and tlistrojvd, thu8 open ing up the way for wo-ld vide t'umccracy. Our boys at ihi front, by heir ccurago have won the applause and admiration c? the world. Brave Frr.uec, b"ave Belgium, what can be said of them? In the sloge to take Fort Verdun, it is so-id DeVox, the gate way to the Fort, wa3 the center of the furnace of fire. Seven times the Crown Prince's Imperial army atK'mped to take the Fort, but failed. For three diys a French regiment held the position, cut off from sup plies, i'.:able to get reinforce ments, without food or water, ar.d all the time u:ic!.r a murderer- fire from an overwhelm ing number of I Inns, these brave Fro'.iclr.n ?'i kept Verdun from g ling i to tie n I j of the ! :iemy. The awful time came, the fate of t'.v Fo t, the fate :f Fr.i.ic; ard civili -at ion, hung in he balance. I .'uma.iit y. Chiirricr.ity r::d the future of the woi'.J w'a.i r.t b a!;- A few French s-jidiois against the Crown. Prince's army- What a mon-.i !-t it was the TT.ermopyle of the ages. Just at the gate of the Fort thi whole spirit of Franco "-eemed to rise up- Then a brave French Lieutenant 6pranr: to thopnrapet and tout ed to the remnan: of his regi ment the brave words which have won many battles "Debuot les Mortis," Stand up yea di:ad, and fight with us. There was something In his manner, in his look, In his soul that reached be yond this world. It wa super natural, so was the spirit f France, she was supernatural. The dead lay all around' him. It was a mlracal, but the spirit of the dead e:itc:.J into the souls of thestj biave men and yive them courage, and Verdun was saved. The Crown Prince's army was defeated with a loss of "ix huivdrxd thousand men. It looks as though Trovldence was with Belgium and France to block tho course of the Huns. News came this morning, Fri day, that Brintoit Bryant, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jocph Bry ant, had died In a hospital In Portland of pneumonia, 'follow ing an attack of Spanish Influen za. The school was lined up and marched to the Government building on tlx: hill, directed by the principal Mips Frances Farnham, assisted by the other teachers, Mrs. Bar zee and Miss Eikins. Each pupil had a flag ,the leader bearing the large silk one. On the hill a numbc-r of patriotic songs were sung by th pupils. Patriotic addresses were made by Agent Chalcraft and Dr. Carter. Every body entered into the spirit of the oecassion and were happy. ,Thrt-j clKiers were given for the flag and three cheers for the great Generals. Pershing, Foch and Haig and thre-a . 'leers for all the boys In Uncle Sam's uni form, three chiory for the school and a tiger for the Kaiser. Prayer was offered by Rev. Wal 'kr Ross. We hope this time it is not a fake.
