THE WAR, THE FARM AND THE FARMER By Herbert Quick , Member Federal Farm Loan Board To farms of this country could carry tha war to a" vlclorioue con clusion even If all tha rest of the na tions should quit The rest will not quit; but we could win It without them It we had to do It. Tbe farmers of the t'nlted States can whip Ger many. We can whip them with Runs. We can wklp them with our products. We can whip them with our money. Kvery farmer In the t'nlted States must remember that the war lias a flrst morlpane on every cent he tins. The lost spare cent m the pockets of every farmer In America should be devoted to the war. The KaiKer befnn foreclosing Ms mnrUEge on our farms when he de clnred ruthlesa submarine warfare. The war la our answer to his bill of foreclosure. Our contribution Is, flrst, our sons and brothers for the trenches; sec ond, the last pound of food products which we can grow by mobilizing our scanty labor supply, utilizing the men, women and children and the towns people about us; and third, money for Liberty Honds. This Is the crucial year of tbe war. Our soldiers aro at the front, hun dreds of thousands of them In the trenches, and a million more ready to go. Tho whole bunion ot carrying on our own part In tbe war, and of aid ing our airier nations In arms, rests on the Vnltrd Stiites Treaaury. If the treasury fulls or faltors or finds IMolf unable to respond to every roll uiKin It. tho war li lost Do you I 'realize that? Your son, and all tho nation a tons are relying on tho t'nlted Stntes Trraauty to furnish things with which they may flrht. Their lives are lost If this treasury falls. Our country la lost If the treas ury falls. Germany wins If the treasury falls. Therefore every cent you con rake and scrape together belongs to the treasury, that our soldiers may com back to us alive and victorious. This Is literally true. We can whip th Germans with our money; but not with the money In our pockets or bnnk accounts. It must go Into the United Etntcs Treasury in subscrip tions to Liberty Bonds. (Tela la the last of a series of Clayton Young and family of Salem have moved to Toledo, ain'd will occupy the Julia Par ker house in southeast Toledo. County Clerk Howell issued a marriage license Wednesday to Sondre Romtvedt of Toledo, and Miss Annie Williamson of Yach ats. A license to wed was secured last Monday by William G. Strench of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Miss Mary Minthorn of New port. R. C. Bemrose of Rock Ci'eek was here doing jury duty the first of the week. Mr. Bemrose paid for another year's Leader while in town. The Ladi3 3f the M. E. Church will serve ice cr3am and cakt Saturday evening in the build ing formerly occupied by Henry Lewis. Every body come. Adolf Haymowicz of Portland was a Toledo visitor the first of the week. Mr. Haymowicz has a ranch in the north end of the county, on Salmon River. Clyde MeMillian wa3 over from Siletz several days this week. He has just recently re ceived word from his brother, Alec, the latter now bej.'i'g: In France. Mrs. W. E. Parthemer, and Mrs. Dyer, arrived up from Ona Wednesday jafternoon, enroute to Portland. They visited with Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Schwartz while in the city. Billy Graham purchased a new Ford truck last Saturday, and is usinz it on the Toledo-Siletz run. It is one of the late: models with the worm drive. He sold the other truck to Sherm Small. Dr. W. J. Curtis, eye specialist of Corvallis, has been In Toledo this week fitting glasses and do ing other optical -work. Dr. Curtis will make rrgular trips here, and has office rooms with Dr. Burgess. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Sheehan, of San Francisco, Calif., were Toledo visitors yesterday. Mr. Sheehan owns property on the bay, and is much pleased with the industrial developments tak ing place here. C. B. Arthur of Harlan wa3 in the city last Friday, leaving Sat urday morning for Eugene where he expected to enter the Officers Training School. Mr. 'Arthur served tlnee years dur iing the Spanish American War. While Gerard was our ambassador In nerlln, the Kalsor said to him one dny that he would stand no nonsense from America after tho war. Do you know what that means? It means that the Germans Intend to subjugate this country If they come out of this war victorious. Tho fierninn imjicrial government has preached tho superiority of Ger many to all the re3t of the world un til the German nation Is drunk with megalomania. One of their great writers exprcnned the prevailing, of. Lflciul view In 1903, when he wrote: "The Teutonic race Is called upon to circle the earth with Its rule, to ex ploit the treasures of nature and ot human power, and to make the pas sive races servient elements In Its cultural development Who ever has tho characteristics of the Teutonic race Is superior. Alt the dark peoples are mentally Inferior, be cause they belong to the passive races. The cultural value of a nation la measured by the quantity of Teu ton Ism It centalns." Are you one of the darker races? Are you willing to be rated u one of the "servient elements" In Ger many's cultural development? You began to be ono of tbe "servi ent elements" when peaceful people wore slaughtered as they carried your produco to market. Was It because you belonged to a "passive race?" This war Is for the punose of say ing to that Insano claim, with the roar of a hundred thousand cannon "NO!" Never atnee the Turks threatened to overwhelm Europe was the world In such dunger as now. Germany must be defeated this year. Urflem wo win, our place In the world Is Inst, and our history as one e the "servient elements" begins. We most withhold nothing from the support of the wsr. We must give our sons. We must bring forth food In abundance. We must give Into tbe treasury of the United Status every cent we can spare. This summer the support of tbe war Is up to the farmers; and Uncle Bam haa never called upon the farmers U vaint three article by Mr. Quit.) -21' NOTICE TO FILE CLAIMS nthe County Court of the State of Oregon for the County of Lincoln In the matter of the Estate of Mario Louise Held, Deceased.
